I finally did something with those rocks

G'day folks,

Given the proximity, I've had the pleasure to visit the coticule quarry twice. Once was of course during the meet-up, and some months after that I went back with my family. Of course I picked up a few pieces of rock. Just a few, honest !! I even had a little game with the kids, "he who brings me the largest stone wins" :lol: .

Finally, after many months, I found/took the time to actually do something with those pieces of rock. I had the sides cut at a company that cuts gravestones etc, and then I used a belt sander to flatten the top and back. I ended up with 5 stones.

So, here goes the first one, actually the biggest piece. I first thought I got myself a Les Latneuses, but those should have a "regular" side, this seems to be all hybrid. Notice the nasty (?) inclusion on the first two pictures. I haven't tested it so I don't know whether I can use the stone with this inclusion.

The second one I actually found already cut but discarded. After cutting off pieces with inclusions etc (I cut away +/- 80%) I ended up with this small hone. A pity that the coticule layer itself is very thin (+/- 1mm at its thinnest). At the back you can still see a spot of the next - coticule - layer. Any ideas what layer this is ?

Next one's weird. I was thinking Les Latneuses (again) but the top doesn't seem typical LL to me. It more reminds me of a La Grise. It's the only one I've briefly tried: on water you have a very quick darkening of the water, if you start with slurry, it seems to make a lot of new slurry. (Bart, I sent you a piece I cut off from this stone). The underside was f***ing hard to f***ing flatten, it must have taken me 3/4 of an hour and several belts.

Next one's also a hybrid stone. I have a bad feeling about those inclusions though. I'll test it before I finish with the backside.

So basically I got myself mostly hybrid stones, it seems those get thrown away most.

Hi Wim,

Yes, very beautiful stones!

I am very interested in testing the 4th(?) stone, the one with the large inclusions and very thin BBW. If you didn't mind sending it, I would pay the postage. :)

Those are stunning! If they don't work for honing you have some nice pieces for a mantle in your home.
Speaking of which, and apologies in advance for changing the subject, but couldn't scrap coticule/bbw stones be picked up in the region for use as kitchen or bathroom tiles? I'm not talking about an entire floor or counter top, but perhaps for trim or edging work. I think that would look very sharp. I imagine that you'd only need one or two good size rocks if you cut the tiles small and thin enough.

I'm afraid the Mrs. has other ideas about what to use as a mantle piece ;)
(hint: not razors either)

I assume you could indeed use BBW around the house if you don't mind the work.
Coticule would be trickier because harder to find.

What about a chess board made out of BBW/Coticule ???

Charnley forest is not far from me.
I've often wondered what the chances are of just finding something lying around in a region known for whetstones? For that mater just stones in general, what would would look for to consider a stone a potential candidate as a whetstone? Has anyone done just that?
