Could it be possible to order a piece of slate cut to the correct dimensions from Ardennes Coticule and then glue the separate half to it? You'll get two hones that way, and you'll not have to deal with shipping the stones back to Ardennes. Otherwise, mounting to wood seems to be a reasonable idea.

Or you could use any number of tiles readily available add a quick score and break one should have no trouble.
