My "magic" slurry stone bout!

well, not a fundamental topic there, just a thing I've noticed yesterday. (don't know if it was worst opening a new topic, but now it's done...)

I'm restauring a frameback I bought last sunday on a sale (don't know the term for "vide-grenier" : on a day (often sunday), an association organises a place in a village where people (amateur and a few pros) can come to sale things they wan't to get rid of).

It has a smiling edge (like moste framebacks), and it was hard to set the bevel near the heel, cause the blade is smaller (I'll post photos later, if you wan't, just tell me where the best place to post )

Well, I was quite disapointed : It could cut arms hair on the 3/4 to 4/5 of the blade, but not on the extreme heel.

I was about to give up for the night, when I watched my little slurry bout (about 4,5 cm long, 2 to 3cm wide approx) : nice slurry was lying on it...

I thought "maybie too small to hone a whole blade, but for a specific part?", so I tried, making (of course) very little strokes on it, but very spotted on the heel.

And the bevel I was fighting to create on my coti (even with strokes spotted on the heel, made on it's smallest part) appeared in less than five minutes! :thumbup:

And it shaved my leg & arm hairs!!!

Just wanted to share this with you, as a beginner, I hadn't thought of using a so little bout, but it must be a faster one on slurry than my stone is, so, it can be usefull (maybie this could be usefull to other new honers...)

at first I had a 80*200mm coticule never got very far with it till I got on the coticule weekend where I purchased a 25*125mm hone and I have to say it went far better since then.

as for the pictures the easiest thing to do is create a dropbox account put you pictures in there and link them by right clicking on them and select copy public link if you're working with the local program or if you're using the online version you right click the image and select copy source url or something like this
then to make them show up you use the next code:

note: replace url by the url you have copied

the other option is use the space provided by coticule.be but you only can in certain section,s of the forum. here you use the boxes below the post reply button. you select the images you want on you local computer by clicking the browse button(this is named different according to the language of the browser you use) and browse to the file you want to upload(note that all picture together can't be bigger than 300000bytes which is about 300Kb)
and if you want them to show up in your post you use the next code:

note: replace the 1 with the number that stands before the according attachment

What I also meant is I don't know where's the best place to introduce my razors (the cafeterai section) (including the fact some are still in the same condition as when I found them, other recieved little work, other are now ready...)

Maybie the "razor hospital" or "miscelaneous stuff..."

Well, about the stones, one thing I appreciate, is having read some topics here before I bought my stone : i didn't feel the need to speak at this moment, but I read, and that decided me to buy a little to medium stone : about 15 cm long, 3 cm wide at one side, 4 on the other.

I fond it's a good size, even without another stone to compare, it seems to suit me.

The only minor regret is that I don't find it very fast on slurry...

I would say the razors inn or the razor hospital but since it are razors that need restoration my preference would go to the razor hospital

Just to get back on topic

I often use a Coticule the size of my index finger, it takes a steady hand to use it, and yields wonderful results.
A stone doesn't need to be large to be effective, as long as the user finds the size comfortable to use it's cool, remember when it comes down to it, size of the area that is doing the job during honing is only tiny.

I have a long thin Les Latneuses "slurry stone" bout (100 x 15mm)that works just fine as a hone. My fingers cramp up while I use it, but its fun and makes a fine shaving edge.

Yes, now that I'm beginning to get used to honing on a stone, I think such a bout could be great... But mine just work fine.

The only kind of regret is that I'd may have prefered a long and thin slurry bout than a square shape as I've got, but as I manage to get a good spoted action with my bout, I think that will be allright. The only thing is that I won't be able to hone a whole blade on it (execpt with small circular strokes, but I'm not fond of them yet...).

And thank you Emmanuel for the tip about "garage sale", one of the best place in France with antique stores to find straight razors... :thumbup:
