Balancing the bevel

I was honing a blade and get a HHT-2 at the heel and the point but only a HHT-1 in the middle.
I noticed that on a side of the blade I can undercut the water, but on the other side it was not possible
in the middle of the blade . So I did my X-stroke trying to put more pressure on this side when the wave comes in the middle area.
After about 100 X-strokes or more, I realise that the bevel was visibly getting larger on the side where I put the pressure. So I decided to balance the bevel size doing more strokes on the side where the bevel was thiner but with a better behaviour with water, it seems to work but was it the right strategy?

Hi,

I have done the same as you before, but I see it as an aesthetic issue... But it could be the sign of an irregularity in the spine. I recently cleaned up a razor for someone else and realized in finishing (I hadn't noticed while doing half strokes)that I could not make contact with the last 16 mm of the bevel. I tried every possible stroke I could think of, an no good. So I carefully measured the spine all the way along and found out that the last 16mm had a markedly thinner profile.

I put an extra layer of tape just on the last 12 mm of the spine and it jogged it right into place for a solid finishing stroke. A bit strange to get used to, but it worked fine.

I can't find my caliper which should be ranged in the garage:confused: but as soon as I'll find it again I will check.
But I was more suspected that my strokes are not as good in both directions and I did quite a lot of strokes on water.
So balancing the bevel in that case is just an aestetic issue or does in enable to get the edge keener?

Laurent. You have to use a larger hone ( the width must be equal to the length of the bade) applying
straight motions (not half strokes or x strokes )That's the test to verify if the blade is irregular or not. Normaly after an adequate number of this way honing the edge width should become isomeric.
If not ,that means is not your wrong but more metal exist In the middle of the blade due to incorrect griding.

Unfortunately I have only a 50mm wide coticule, maybe with a 30° sweep angle stroke?
