Fabric strop

...Chris,you did'nt wanted a linen like this. How you entangled in this story....

Just my unabashed curiosity, I guess. I'm always interested in learning more of every aspect of this crazy little hobby of ours. And, knowing my own good self, I'll probably eventually donate the linen along to another member after I've had my way with it.
For the cost of shipping, I'm glad to have a chance to try a new strop, especially one from Torolf, who, i think, is a master of the strops. I've actually got a couple of his strops now, but the others are so well finished I never had the heart, coupled with a waning desire, to perform destructive testing with them as I'd originally intended.

A couple! how did I let you get more Torolf strops than me? Wow I need to stop counting bacterial cultures and open the internet once in a while.

I would love just one of Torolfs strops

Torolf has very kindly dispatched 2 metres of hose-type linen to my address at no cost. As soon as it arrives, I'll contact you for your shipping info.
If any of you would like them hung, let me know. Cedrick may be able to provide a vintage strop hanger or two, and, barring that, I could devise a simple leather clasp type hanger that will do in a pinch. Otherwise, I'll simply send the linen cut to (aprox.) 50 cm.

If the fabric isn't all spoken for, I would love a section. My fabric strops are all home made and, from what I read here, severely lacking in the effectiveness department. I've exhausted the possibilities in my little town so this would be great.

Cheers,
Rick

hey guys,
Torolf's strop material came in yesterday. Woot! (Thank you very much Torolf, it was very generous of you! Every one involved should raise a toast to your kindness and generosity. )
Wow! It's thick, and wide, and very substantial and feels just wonderful! I have no idea why he's giving this stuff away!;)

I haven't measured it out just yet, nor have I cut it, but if there is enough to spare, i'll try to include Rick.

Seconded, and thirded! Thank you, Torolf!!

I received the material today and mant thanks to both Torolf and Chris. Just FYI iwanted to stop the edges from tethering so I used CA glue. Each drop of CA caused the fabric to let off a little gas cloud in each spot shortly after applying. Thought was odd so if you do the same I would do it outside.

Boy, that was quick.
What do you think of the material, Scott?
I think it's pretty nice looking stuff, it's got great heft, and a very nice feel to the hand.
I've tried mine only once, as I don't have it hung properly yet, but it seemed to work very well.

(BTW, sorry I never got around to taking a photo of it for ya... I've got a bunch of stuff I need to photograph... too lazy to lug the camera out and mess around up-loading photos.)

I have a feeling that George's package is going to get hung up in customs... it's got a couple other things in it that are sure to raise a few eyebrows at the Customs Office:scared:

Not here yet. We should not have to worry - they can sample/test the items all they want. But, you never know.

[small][sup]Denny does not have to worry - a vintage stone is not in the packet.
Not heard much from him lately. I miss the cracks from my new friend. ;) [/sup][/small]

I hate it when my posts get dropped I usually copy them until they go it happens so often I for got this time. Anyway The material is very heavyweight and I dare say i'll have it the rest of my life. I love the feel of it though I have only run a razor over a couple passes. I want to iron it or have it pressed nice and flat by a dry cleaner. Wonderful material and i need to find a piece of leather to match. the piece I had been working on would look better as a shoe and its also a 2 1/2'' and the linen is 3''. I'm thinking a nice blank of Buffalo when I find a suitable vendor. Thanks again to both you and Torolf and when I have it assembled and using it I will report back on it with some Pics.

[h2] It is heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere ... [/h2]

The linen is here. Thank you Torolf and Chris ... the material is just fabulous.

Chris, much thanks to the other 'two' items as well. Eat your heart out Captain Dennis Kelly.

I don't know why but I was sitting here looking at a vintage 2-1/2" strop I have the surface is subpar for for razor use anymore.(Thats how it came.)Anyway it slides perfectly snug inside the fabric from Torolf giving me a very nice fabric strop with the stiffness of leather. Thanks again Torolf and Chris I really appreciate this fine linen.

Well, I'm glad you all could get some use out of it. It does no one any good just sitting around my house.

regards,
Torolf

Yes, Thanks Torolf. This stuff is fantastic! I really really dig the heaviynes of it, but it's still smooth at the same time. There's something about the weight of it that really gives it a sense of substance.
Between this and the leather of my Kanayama, I'm set for the next few years now.

Scott used CA glue to seal up the ends, but I was wondering what you'd recommend for bonding some leather caps to it?
I've got some oily, thin, split-grain latigo that I've been thinking of thinning down and using for caps, but I've had trouble in the past with some glues reacting with the oil in the leather and failing. At least I think that's why the glue let go.
:)

I know you can buy a fabric glue in rolls that melts when heated. How would that do? Chris if you have a spare strip of 2-1/2" leather insert inside the fabric and see if you like the feel? I have TI paste on side and I couldn't be happier.

does anyone have a pic of this fabric? sounds pretty cool and maybe i can source some out near me to build my own strop.

Hi, George reminded me that I wanted to post a reply...

Chris, I think you are out of luck trying to glue the leather you're talking about. Depending on the leather, contact cement could hold a while, or just long enough to do something else to it: put in a rivet or two, or take it to your local shoe maker and have him stitch the whole thing up.
Contact cement will do a good job of capping some leather to the ends of the fabric, but it should be a thin, non-oil stuffed leather if you want it to stay put.
Super glue works well to inhibit unraveling, as has been mentioned. Leather caps also help to prevent an eventual hanging solution from pulling out of the fabric (a good grommet does the same, as vintage linens were usually set up).

Just using contact cement and some thin leather on the holding end will do fine. Much less strain on it there...

regards,
Torolf
