BBW that leaves better edge than coti side...

So I was messing around with my workhorse and favorite razor a puma that I restored and then suddenly the strop came off the hook, hit the razor and put a very tiny ding. So I decided to hone it off with only a BBW and a coti, being the coti fan I am. So after two days and about 4 hours total work, the ding is gone and left is this really shiny bevel after working only the BBW side... curious I stropped and shaved and DAAAAAMN! the edge was better than the coti side, super smooth and really sharp.

So I was wondering what are the chances that some BBW are better than cotis? and also why is it purple? cotis are like the ultimate hone IMO they are super addictive. I want them all!!!!:w00t:

It is my experience that the BBW's I've tried were certainly good edge finishers in their own right. They are really very underestimated. Whether some BBW's deliver better edges than some Coticules? I've never been able to answer such questions. What does it mean: "better"? Keener? I've always felt that keenness was more in my hands as a honer, than in my hones, and that the most difficult Coticules often provided me with the smoothest edges, once I somehow managed to squeeze that final bit of keenness out of it.

My congratulations of your great results

There he goes again, teasing us. Denny

well by better I mean the shave itself is more pleasing to me than the shave off the coticule side. Also when honing I did notice something strange, I was using the dilucot method on the bbw side to remove the ding. When I was at the stage of using only water, the scratchy feeling that I so lovingly associate with coticules was gone... it was as if I was running the blade through glass on the bbw. I must also state that I like to make three types of strokes on my razors, they are all a variation of the x stroke but I like doing heel leading and toe leading strokes to form x pattern scratches on the blade and also x pattern circle strokes. My idea behind that is that all those three combined strokes should remove most of the grooves left by single x pattern strokes, the idea came from katana polishers who vary their strokes in order to create a even plane with no scratches. I figured there is nothing to loose and I don't want to say the shave is smoother or magical but I guess mentally I like the satisfaction it gives me to believe that maybe the edge is more plane like rather than corrugated like.

This makes sense to me if you consider that the glassiness/smoothness that you feel may be because you're likely finishing (mostly) on mica (on the BBW). It would be interesting to see the scratch pattern of a BBW- vs. a comparably honed razor on coticule. I would predict more 'polishing' (as I define it...) going on with the BBW.

This is really very interesting..

So many things I can try with my new stone... Great information here!

Exactly Ralfy!

I've read in so many places that the BBW is good for coarse tools, but not much more than a backer, or maybe a bevel setter for the straight razor folks. And now I find that it can be much more useful to me than I thought...

Why is there so much disinformation, and downright misinformation out there?

Look out! That very thing has been the subject of the only contentious threads i've ever seen here.

I finally shaved with a razor I did on my BBW a week or more ago.... day-am! but it was a smooth shave. easily as nice as any dilucot edge I've gotten yet. If I hadn't had two other razors to test shave, I would have been perfectly content to cary on with it. BBW's rock!:p

Ignorance, Arrogance, Commercialism, etc etc

Thats as contentious as I am going to get hahaha

I will say that with the right technique and skill levels, the humble BBW produces a wonderful shaving edge, and thats from dulled on glass to shave ready (After stropping) now how much does this one hone cost? and how easy is it for the average Joe to perfect the skills needed?

Oh well a little more contentious than I wanted but hey we are all friends here at least....lol
