Fabric strop

What, India? Surely there's something in North America. Does it have to be fire hose? I doubt Tony Miller sources from India, meaning that there is probably a good source of linen webbing in the US.

We are equal opportunity testers and hoarders. At least, I am. So, it does not have to be from India or a fire hose. As long as it is some nice thick, useful, linen strip good for stropping, it will be perfectly fine.

But no blood-linen for me (-- get it? like blood-diamonds  )

That said, greater chances, I think, will be to find this from fire hoses from before the 1950s or current producers in India or China.

There was a Massachusetts company called Neidner that used to make linen fire hoses right here in MA. After changing hands many times, it is a Canadian company now and still in fire protection business. But this morning they told me they do not make or carry flax hoses.

One other possibility is that a very handy old warrior can weave small batches by hand at home and distribute. (Denny, Denny, can you hear us now?) Other than that, our odds remain with recycled hoses or producers in China and India.

For the silk-collared, there are always other specific high-end brands. ;) This, however, is a blue-collared initiative (so far, I think).

I've been working the google thing on the internet machine pretty hard.
In North America, flax hoses went out in the '60's, supplanted by modern textiles.
India, and possibly China, are probably the only remaining bastions of out-moded technology like flax hose, probably due to the high labour costs of flax production.
Now, if we all want to chip in, I've found a source for a 1500kg hose weaving loom from China, capable of producing 75 ft/hour of the hose of our choice.:D We could do hemp, silk, flax, whatever yarn we could throw at it!

Any hint of what the pricing might be on this?

Chris do you have a farmer in your area with 40 acres of flax ready to harvest?
nah... that'd be the stubble-jumpers one province over.
I hear the Belgians are one of the world's biggest producers, though.

Hi Chris,

I have a couple meters of that linen that Emmanuel shows, if you want it. I would want postage for it and a promise to share.

regards,
Torolf

Thanks Torolf!
I had to go back through the thread to figure out how the hell I ended up here. I'm really not looking for more strop material; sometimes I just google for the heck of it. George, Jay and Scott seem to be. I'd be more than willing to pick up the postage on it and share it out though, and if there's enough left for me to keep a piece, well, I'm sure I could find some use for it.

We go back a long ways, Chris!! ;) :w00t: :w00t:

I have never sold you any snake oil, either. ;) So, what do you say, am I #1 in the short list?

I just donated my linen strop that was not in a set with leather to a beginner with no $. I would be happy to pay freight or whatever I may for a piece of the hose linen whenever an agreement is made. Thank you gentlemen. And I love Mac computers!

George, Jay and Scott:

Torolf has very kindly dispatched 2 metres of hose-type linen to my address at no cost. As soon as it arrives, I'll contact you for your shipping info.
If any of you would like them hung, let me know. Cedrick may be able to provide a vintage strop hanger or two, and, barring that, I could devise a simple leather clasp type hanger that will do in a pinch. Otherwise, I'll simply send the linen cut to (aprox.) 50 cm.

Thanks for being the point person on this, Chris, my friend. If you are pressed for time, I will just try the grommet technique you briefed me about. No problems. But ... your handiwork will be a million times better than mine!

(50 cms = 19.7" - good!)

Thanks, Torolf! Your kind generosity is truly appreciated.

[small] [sub]Let the record show that there was no snake-oil involved here. There also will not be any post facto claims of hazmat-suited cleaning. [/sub] [/small]

Thank you Torolf and Chris the dimensions are perfect.I am going to order a piece of leather from somewhere to accompany this fine material. I am not sure what yet but something besides Latigo. If the cloth comes with a hanger that would be perfect but if not I can take care of the rest myself as I am happy just to obtain it! If there is anything I can do for either of you don't hesitate to ask!
