First success !!!!!

I've been reading Toons posting with great interest ,as he has described my first attempt(last night) with a coti down to a T.So hopefully i'll be able to learn like him from the replies he's getting from the good folk on here.

Good to see you, Reggyboy.
Welcome to the coticule-hangout.
I've been getting along quite well lately.
Not in the least helped by the great advise I got from the other members.
There are some wise men around here.
Also Tim has been a great help. He send me two blades (an old scaleless 6/8 and a 1920'2 Shumate).
Just to try and work things out.
And I have. I've been getting better and better edges, and, most important, great shaves.
So, just hang in there and it will come to you. I can tell you for sure.

There will remain mysteries in life, but the coticule will open up to you over time. I know I've only gotten a glimpse of it, but already it's worth while.
Certain thing I still wonder about. I'll tell you about last night. (sounds saucier than intended :p )
I've been working the Shumate witgh the coticule. It all went alright. I began to feel the velvety draw on the hone.
Kept the slurry nice and wet. So, after a while, it cut armhair like a old farmer with a new scyth. I taped and set the second bevel. about 30 laps with watery slurry and the about 60 with just water (I know, it should have been a hundred, but my arm was growing tired). Rinsed everything, tropped 60/60 (linen/leather) and tried HHT.

I grabbed an hair from my wifes brush (I don't have a decent lenght of hair myself  so i stick with my wife or daughters hair). I snapped immidiately, with just the slighted sound. I couldn't believe it, because I can put together an entire stringorchestra, with all teh violins I had
So I grabbed another hair and, yeeaha, again and again. The haires snapped at about 2/3 inches.
So you'll believe me if I tell you I was quite chuffed with myself. I must be about HHT-3, or maybe even better.

So, I put it all away to shave the next morning. And, lo and behold, the shave wasn't half as good as I imagened
(I didn't do anything about it anymore, no stropping or anything.)
The shave was oke, but I have had better and smoother shaves with violins.

Does this sound familiair to anyone?? Or does it only roves that any test is just a test and no substitute for the real thing??

Hi Toon,

If you want to rely on the HHT for measuring edge keenness, you have to calibrate it as described in the HHT-article. Otherwise the results will show too much variance to be successfully correlated to your shaving results.

With clean thick hair, it is manageable to pop hairs right off the hone (before any stropping), at about 3/4" from the holding point, or even wider. If you strop such an edge with good skill, it'll pop hairs at any distance. I've never had an edge that didn't shave admirable when those markers were met. Most seasoned Coticule users I know of, that rely on the same method, have shared very similar results.

If you were too tired to do 40 laps more, you probably would have better called it a day after the bevel correction stage, and put the razor away till the next day.

My advice at this point is to redo the finishing steps with 2 layers of tape on the spine.

Next time the razor needs full honing, you can easily reset the bevel with slurry and keep it at one layer.

I use tape with a thickness of 0.15mm. It's come to my attention that tape of 0.10 also exists, maybe your should check that out.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Hi Toon

are you saying that the shumate passed hht but was not so good shaving?

if so it may a few more laps on water then a good strop

also i have found that some shavers i have honed actually perform better a day or so after they were honed

I almost always leave mine 24 hours. not sure why it happens maybe they cool down or something

Maybe its just me

It sounds like you are almost there perhaps just needs a little refining. I must admit if i get stalemate like that 10 laps on TI paste on linen sorts out the most stubborn of baldes

I will hone the shumate at some stage and compare results

I'll give it another go today.
Maybe a little touching up.
I'll try two layers, as Bart suggested.

And Tim, to be absolutely clear.
It wasn't a BAD shave, just not as good as I imagined.

Anyway, I'm still enjoying the process of discovering and developing.
SO, I think I'll stick with it :)
