Hello and where to start

You have to keep track which kind of tape you used:confused:

That´s the only disadvantage I know.

Welcome, by the way.

Regards,
Tok

Found this on 3M's homepage:

"The first commercial tape for electrical insulation was cotton friction tape, which became available in the early 1930s. Vinyl electrical tape was introduced in the mid 40s."

Definitely not as old and classy as the coticules :)

Poor Bart, he's so proud of the Unicot method, and you see it as something to do if all else fails ;)
He really doesn't give a fuck about these things. As long as everyone is happily shaving.

Bart.

They never used tape in the old days... but for those of us who prefer to “tape the spine” here is an interesting invention patented in 1885…
It’s a Guard for Razor Blades… “Today” collectors are more inclined to protect the back of the razor from excessive wear or to change the bevels angle. However, back then, the priorities were somewhat different… in this case, it’s used to protect the hone and strop from the “sharp” backs of razors and knives...

You get impression these folks prized the sharpening tool over the tools to be sharpened.

I've got a wedge that has a strange notch that runs down the first half of the length of the blade on one side of the spine.... looks exactly like it's set to receive some kind of sleeve. I've wondered if it wasn't for just exactly that...

I have seen those blades with the strange “bevel” on the spine…as if for some attachment… a bayonet maybe?
That one is a mystery.

I saw a straight with one of those attached for sale not too long ago. Can't remember where though ... B&B maybe. Cool to read what it really is for

I just got my coticule btw. It looks very nice and now I just have to decide whether to ruin the edge on my currently one and only straight to test it or if I should wait till it wears down.

That's a beautiful stone. I think you'd be well served to just use it as a touch up stone whenever you feel the need.

a really beautiful stone...

Paul, why would you say that? The dang thing is almost indestructible. Use the heck out of it. Get another razor! YT, Denny

p.s. Why do I feel like I will have to eat those words?

Hehe, I have a W&B that I restored but couldn't get sharp enough on my Arkansas stones. It was sent away for honing but unfortunately they guy that was going to hone it had a medical emergency. If I had it here I would blunt on of the razor without thinking. I'll probably just go ahead and do it just to learn ... I like learning :)

I did 20 laps with just water on my straight and stropped it on linen and leather and it's still a HHT 4 so I didn't do any harm at least

If you would like a razor for practice, I would be pleased to send you a loaner to keep as long as you wanted. YT, Denny

That is a very kind offer, Denny. I am tempted to accept although it might be more instructive to work on my razor that I know how sharp it can get and how it normally feels? Worst case I'll just have to shave with a DE for a couple of days till I figure out the coticule ;)
