Let's talk about Strops

I find this to be an interesting conversation because I do perceive a difference. Note that I used the word perceive because I'm in the habit of periodically playing with the TPT after different strops.... I can not actually say that their is a discernible difference, or if I just perceive it.
Maybe you just think you perceive it! :w00t:

Wow, now that's deep!:D

well... some more stropping's been goin' on....
Torolf's strops rock! In all fairness to Jim and the Kanyama's, Torolf's strops are very similar. Much of the same vibration and texture is shared between the two. Though if I had to guess, I'd say the Kanayam is more dense, therfore it's got just a little more in the feed-back department. So I'd say the issues I've had with my Kanayama are all me.

I've since stropped 3 more razors on the TI paste/Graphite strops, and I think that there is something to that graphite. I'm kinda coming around to the idea of treating one of my Torolf strops with TI paste on one side and graphite on the other.
I can't help but think that the two differnt pastes kind of compliment each other. The TI paste ha Aliminum Oxide in it, which is at one end of the Moh's scale (9, according to Wikipedia), and the Graphite is a 1 or 2 on the moh's scale. I'd swear that the graphite smooths out what the TI leaves. Probably very similar to the Dovo chalk treatment.

What i really need to do is some kind of blind test... but i can't figure out how to out-smart myself enough to do it.:w00t:

Finding a nearby companion with whom you can swap identical razors that are honed in the same fashion, but stropped in different fashion, is one possibility for blinded tests.
But in this case, why don't you teach your son or your wife to strop? And have the razors stropped in an adjacent room, where you can't see it, while you are lathering up for your shave. This person could strop up 2 identical razor, and you could shave both halves of your face to found out if you can detect any difference. To rule out any external factors, you must repeat that test for at least 3 or 4 shaves, so that all other factors are randomized. That sounds like a lot of work, and that it indeed is. But it's the only way to make any meaningful comments about shaving difference cause by different stropping parameters.

Otherwise, you are just having fun, which is good for you, and amusing for us! :)

Kind regards,
Bart.
