Good stuff, my friend. I just whipped through 4 days' growth with my little Puma, with the same great sensation (except 2 passes)... While the novelty is gone, and the excitement has left, there's still that unmistakable satisfaction derived from great results from our silly little hobby. It's good to know that sharing my experiences has helped you along the path of understanding your LPB.

Cheers,

Paul

So what is more important when you're stuck to HHT1-2 on a LPB?

- go back to a thin slurry stage as there was some king of hysteresis effect?
- rince the stone frequently and use a thick layer of water?

not sure if your asking me the question but i can answer. stuck at hht 1 or 2. so if i'm violining of the hone. i work on water for as long as it takes. try half strokes and normal x strokes , pressure ligt pressure. under running water . fres water every 10 laps . i find that at some stage i get past hht1 with out going back to slurry.

My second shave today was even nicer . i did 100 laps on water . fresh water every 10 laps . then i did last 50 laps under running water . the shave was even nicer. Now i have perfect for me and would enjoy shaving every day of the edge. the shave is smooth and ha a nice sticky dull feel which i think we all experianced at some point. this is a typical coticule edge.

Thanks for the answer, so the only thing I need is finding my way with water only : refreshing the water more frequently and improving my strokes.

Yep Thats the point .Gary well advise.fresh water every 10 laps .I would like to add something on this issue as i always do. I use a plastic container full of water and every ten laps i dip the blade in.By this way in the shame time will achieve two things :1) You add fresh water on the hone 2)You rinse the adge of some garnets who wander in the water .The result will be always better.
Garry and Laurent please try this way keeping me informed.
Best regards

I would say so. many a time i have finished dilucoting and just made a violin. By working on water you will defanatley improve your hht of the hone. You will come to a point where the hht reaches its best of the hone. The times this as happend . Somtimes one more set of back and fort strokes on water and then some more finishing strokes realy does work. It can take several times . just work on the razor with water in your own way.You will see progress. Even go and strop and se what happens, somtimes you can see a jump from violin to a 3/4 by hitting the linen/ leather. if not go back to water. If this fails no matter what. I just go back to a thin skimmed milk slurry and start again. It may be your bevel had not maxed out, or you lost s good edge at some point in slurry mode, but normal water finishing makes the differance if the bevel was set fully and you diuted nice and the stroke was pritty good. And the whole bevel hit the hone at every part of the shaving edge. Its easy to not realize you did'nt quite hit the heal or toe enough times.

keep practising it gets worse before you get better. I have good days and not so good and exallant days.

just latley i'm finishing at the kitchen or bathroom sink i rinse honeregular. I will also rinse blade , sounds a good thing to do. Some times i notice a slurry that is just visable that clings to my blade.

are you saying. Dip the blade into a container of water every 10 laps. So that you refresh the blade with fresh water but some of the wondering garnets get on the blade?. So that this gives a little extra cutting power while water honing? or by dipping in fresh water your keeping razor free from garnets? just read again and i under stand now.

Thats good Garry Some hones work leaving autoslurry ,not allowing to meet the requested edge.I always let my hone with a HHT 3 at least. The only fact which makes it difficult to me is just some razors that present unbalance between the spine and the edge.

Quik update on the shaves of lpb. since my first very nice shave of lpb. I have had two more full on shaves. Before each shave i did anothe 60/70 laps on fresh water/and running water . The 3rd and second shave were perfect. i noticed a slight improvemant with 2nd shave. The 3rd one this morning was extremly soft and smooth. i'd say its now in my favourites along with other razors. water honing will kep this one going from now on.

i'm not sure what worked exactly. all i did differant was. started with a much thinner slurry than normal. diluted much slower as in tinydrops of water not big drop or medium. so dilution was much more prasise. Finished with normal method that bart explains in acadamey. the only differnace was water rinsing regular and honing under running water. I also think my hone (lpb) has calmed down since lapping and does not auto slurry as it was. The surface after lapping was auto slurrying like mad on just water. Now its working as normal. the edge was as good as any hone i have it the max on even my hybrid which is my favourite and most consistant. having said that i could'nt get a great edge on the henkells of that. I did on the lpb this time round.

That make me smile :)

I usually rinse every 20-25 laps on water, but I'd guess every 10 would be quite efficient still and more apt to prevent autoslurry dulling. Good stuff, Gary:thumbup:

I would like to try a LPB sharing my findings .Unfortunately my LPB ordered to Jarrod was sent without tracking number and lost.I don't know if she has similar characteristics like La veinette that i have in my collection
Best regards

very similar. My lv and lpb are both similar. both cut well on slurry. Both seem similar on water. the lpb i have seems to only slightly auto slurry the lv does'nt seem to do that.

i remember you saying about your lpb from jarrard thats a pitty it got lost in the post.

My La Petite Blanche which is more red than white by the way, is much faster on water than my La Veinette ( I don't have a LV with manganese inclusions). Half X-strokes on water make the water becoming gray. I find (very recently:blush: ) that using a thicker layer of water, rinsing every 10 strokes and diping the blade in water helps. It seems I can go from HHT 1-2 to HHT 2-3.

I have two lpb's one has a red rash and is on a slate base. the other is a normal combo. Both feel differant. as you say my lpb generate the same with water, the combo one . the other one its hard to say. My lv has glint of faint red in it. It seems quiker than my last lv on water that one was whitish more pale cream, it was certainly slow on water. So i think they can all vary/

My LPB and LV are both similar on slurry in that they are fast cutters. On water though they are quite different. My LPB darkens (no blackens) water while doing half strokes in very short order. My LV can slightly darken water, but it most definitely doesn't remove as much metal as the LPB. The LPB also auto slurries and I've been trying to get my results consistent by finishing at the kitchen sink and rinsing often. The LV is a breeze to finish on for some reason and I suspect it is because it doesn't auto slurry.

Still trying to figure my LPB for finishing consistently, but hopefully I'll get there as I've been using it a lot recently to get to know it better.

Yours sound the same as mine.

Well I did several razors last night on my LPB. For finishing I just stood at the kitchen sink and made sure to wash the blade and stone after every 25 strokes or so. I did the final finish under running water with just the weight of the blade (or slightly less) until I got a "sticky" feeling with the blade on the hone.

Test shaved with them all last night as well and they all turned out great! Really love the speed of this stone and hopefully I'm learning the best way to finish on it as well.

great stuff:thumbup:

i love mine thats why i was'nt giving up on it. just a pleasure to hone on. even with very milky light slurry this lpb i have cuts very nice . while honing on water it feels very nice.
