mastro livi razor honing...

You might find this post interesting http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showthread.php?p=85994

I don't know about his steel I can only speak to shaving with a couple of them. Lynn brought a whole bunch of them to a meet and we all got to choose one to shave with if we wanted. I chose a 8/8th Damascus for half the shave an a 8/8th regular steel blade for the rest of the shave. Lynn honed both of these razors. In short they shave very very well. They were smooth and the beard just kinda fell off:) I wish I could afford one. Oh well at least I got to shave with a couple of them.
I need to find the pics------

i ve added some pressure to entire process(most for the bevel work) and raise the stroke count to 20 + about 20 diluition.

Well I have never shaved with one of his razors, however judging from what you say, and seeing some of his videos, I suspect he tempers steel “unusually hard” (puts me in mind of some hard vintage razors) and hard razors will tend to be harsh on the skin when finished on the hone.
This would explain why he uses a pasted strop to finish his edges as it creates a more obtuse angle at the edge (slightly rounded bevel at the very edge), such an edge on "unusually hard steel" will most likely be kinder to the skin...

So let me suggest you do one of two things:
1) Place one or two layers of tape on the spine and do a Unicot.
2) Finish the edge on a CrO2 pasted strop. As it appears his razors are intended to be finished that way.
Please let us know if that makes for a less harsh shave.

hello smythe!!! you're right, mastro livi told me that the temper of my razor is a bit hard...now i have succes with dilucot for ALL MY RAZOR ....but with the mastro....mhnnnn....

i ve passed it on CROX and now it is perfect!

thanks

Good deal Stalker glad to hear that. I had forgotten all about his using CrOx to finish all his razors. I wonder what TI paste would do? Of course if CrOx works there is no reason to try it:)

i have used ti paste on livi razors and it works fine i also tryed is cro.ox . i also had mine shaving of coticule in cluding my inox damascus, never had a rough edge.
never shaved with the steel stalker mentioned. it also amazed me how livi realy wacks 's his razor up and down that crox paste. i actauly tryed it and it also worked .

Gary I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I saw that video of him-as you said "whacking" that razor--amazing!

i asked livi why he uses cro.ox? he replyed to hone the edge yellow side polishes. he said it works if you do it same as me. i'm not to sure , i will say its good stuff and it helps if needed. the loom strop is a master piece i realy like it. i wished he made a hanging strop in the same leather, that leather is so soft.

I have a Livi Bergamo Damascus right now that I am having issues with. Russ honed it using Dilucot on his coticule, but it still seems harsh. Its much more harsh than the Dovo or TI I did. I just took it back to my coticule for 60 more x strokes. Ill see if this evens it out at all. If not, It might be making a trip to a member here.

hey why you don't you use a crox? the livi steel is a bit harsh and the temper is very very hard....20 light passes and the razor fly!
