About that different stroke: there is this theory that promotes a more lateral (sideways) stroke, as opposed to pushing the edge straight forward. According to the theory, it puts less stress on the edge, and lessens possible ill effects of the very tip of the bevel colliding with the microscopical protrusions of the whetstone's abrasive surface.Kind regards,
Bart.
Man, I thought that was my finishing secret! Sometimes if my edge doesn't fire I will make a misty slurry and do 20 or so heel to point strokes with maybe a 1/4" forward movement. My guess was that it changed the direction of the scratches so when finishing on water the coticule cut at a new angle. This would make finishing on water faster I hypothesized. It works for me!
