Using slurry stone

I have a natural coti/bbw stone, but I'm not sure whether the accompanying slurry stone has a bbw side. The 'bbw' side is not purplish but a lot darker black.

If this is slate, can I use the coticule side of the slurry stone to create a slurry on the bbw side of the natural stone?

Thanks

I personally would not use the yellow coti on the blue side. They are related to some extent, yes, but they are not the same and I would reckon that you end up somhow mixing the honing properties.

I dont't know about the slate. As far as I know this rock does not have any significant abrasion and sharpening properties. Thus I would assume that it could be used as slurry stone, provided that it is hard enoungh to actually grind the blue - and not vice versa. Specialist advice called for ....

If you happen to have some sort of DMT, that's the easiest way to go. You can also just use sandpaper. In that case however make sure you use quality material that does not lose particles which will leave ugly scratches on your bevel and nicks on the edge.

I use a DMT as others do. Some say it doesn't do the BBW side any good to mix Coti slurry with it. Whether that's true or not I don't know but it makes sense not to mix tham.

Let's test your slurry stone first: put some water on the dark side and rub with a little piece of sandpaper. Is the resulting slurry of a dull gray color? Than it's slate, and no good for anything else that reinforcement of the Coticule side. Does the slurry has an obvious purplish hue? Than it's a BBW.

If it's not a BBW, I wouldn't use it for creating slurry, though I've never tried. What I however did try is to use a Coticule slurry stone on the BBW, and it works just perfect, with only one disadvantage: normally a BBW-slurry has less of a limiting factor on the maximum keenness than a Coticule-slurry. But in most cases, you're going to apply some sort of dilution strategy anyway, in which case it doesn't matter at all. We are currently testing 2 methods for honing razors with just a BBW, and with these methods, it doesn't seem to matter at all wheter a Coticule or a BBW slurry stone is used.

For the rest, I second Phil's and Rico's advice: if you don't trust it, go with a diamond hone, or a piece of good quality wet&dry sandpaper.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Semi-Off-Topic Question:

Do you mind from which layer your coticule slurry stone comes from(I mean, if you use it on a coticule, not a BBW)? Does it change anything, if it´s not from the same layer? I mean, if you´d take a slurry stone from a fast layer on a slow stone, would it help/do nothing/???
