Ok, first off I'm jealous. Second, I keep coming back to this thread as all I have right now is a BBW for my naturals, which I was given.
I have had trouble getting an edge off of anything yet so I started using the progression that Bart suggested to learn muscle memory. i figured that the stone didn't matter for this. I dulled the razor on a glass. I started through with the BBW all the way through a dilution. I was just playing around with no expectations. when done I touched the razor to my arm and it felt about as sharp as many of my other razors honed by various people. I decided to shave with it last night expecting it to feel like the edge off of a 5k hone. It didn't. I shaved completely with it and felt a smoothness that I haven't felt before this (mind you it wasn't the closest shave, but very passable). I will run a couple more razors on this stone, just to continue to get some muscle memory, but I will not dull this razor for fear that I cannot return to this state yet. This has me thinking about the offer for free honing on a coti. I have yet to feel the edge off of a coti, but if it is anything like this...
reading what I have about the smoothness of these edges is why I am here, but feeling what I can only assume is close to what you guys were describing has cemented my feelings for these beauties.

There's always a chance that I screwed up, but in this case I'm pretty confident in what I've done.

I don't think you screwed up. I must be your BBW, or the 4 specimen Maurice borrowed me + 1 I own myself, that I used for doing the initial "Operation True Blue"(OTB) research. I tried many different options and did many test shaves, and I dit got the best shaves when I used the BBW's with plain water. I remember that I abandoned it early in the search for a standard procedure. Maybe too early? Those 4 hones are still here, so we'll get to the bottom of this, once OTB is finished and the test report is published. There are only 2 more testers to go, both in Europe, hence I don't expect it will be long now.

Sounds like you're doing very well, Gerrit! :thumbup:
Don't underestimate that BBW. I have certainly had as nice shaves with BBW finished edges as I had with Coticule finished ones.

I guess I am just as excited for having finished a honing to a functional edge. I have a few other razors that I'll try to run across the stone this weekend. I am also going to try some finishes after along the lines of chromium oxide, cerium oxide, BBW strop, chalk...
BTW I got this BBW as a complete surprise gift from Rich after I gave him some paddle strops. I didn't ask for anything in return I just felt like helping out.
This just reminded me that I should let him know of my success.
