newbie intro

If your getting it to shave arm hair off the BBW but not the coti, my guess would be your slurry on the coti is a little too thick, remember thick slurry dulls the edge. try using the 1/2 strokes on a light slurry, and dont be afraid to add a little pressure with your index finger, if the slurry dries add a couple drops of water and do a couple of regular strokes to mix it in then continue with 1/2 strokes.
If you dont get the entire edge shaving arm hair you will not be able to move on, any further work will be wasted time, but if you get that first benchmark then further work just gets easier and easier, good luck mate and happy christmas

very true ralfy exactly what i have found good advice

Thanks gary, and one other thing James, if your not getting the heel quite down dont be afraid to do a few straight strokes so you can catch it, as long as you follow that with X strokes it should be just fine.

All the advice is great. The key thing is experiment a little

I came from nowhere to honing a decent edge fairly quickly

I did this by practise and seeing what went well and not well

You soon get there and then there is no going back

Then you run out of razors to sharpen!!

so...with a bit of a journey ive reached somewhere! I didnt quite get the girl to pop hairs on unicot, so i put an extra layer of tape and gave it about 100 laps.....just about got it to pop hairs.

so i stropped it with dovo green then red pastes then 60 linen 60 leather, sliced the end of my lil finger while cleaning the blade (nothin like bart's injury - so dont think im complainin! ), so i watched some scrubs while holdin my arm above my head to stop the bleeding - joyous occasions.

so anyway, i gave the HHT a go and had a mixed result!! From the centre of blade to the heel, all i had to do was touch my superthin hair to the blade and it fell away, quiet as a mouse, but from the centre to the toe, it was more of catch and pop - so a mixed 5 to 3 along the blade. bloody chuffed with the 5 close to the heel :p

so i decided to give it 50 laps on just water to even it up/bring the whole blade to the 4/5 region on the test, and after 60 on linnen and leather, the entire blade has dropped to a 3 - ARRRG! I feel like im cheating with the pastes so i will come back to it tomorrow. Maybe im pressing too hard on my strokes on water? (eventhough im consciously doing it as light as i possibly can).

good news is i could do this all day :)

great.......looks like more scrubs is in store for me

Well done James (with the honing not the finger!...lol) anyway, hht3 is ok straight off the stone mate, once its reached that stage try 60 laps on clean canvas strop and then 60 laps on a clean leather one, that will bring it up to a 4 or maybe even a 5, and thats as good as you will ever need

Ahhhh! HHT-3! You're soooo close!

Thinking about it now, I was in the same position a couple months ago. Now I don't have a problem popping hairs off the hone. I wonder what has change since then. I guess it's just all in the muscle memory, huh? Developing confidence in your stroke?

One of the things that I do when I'm going doing my finishing strokes, I really focus on a super light touch (similar to trying to finish on a Norton 8K). Remember too, that even in the Academy mentioning doing 100 laps won't seem like too much once you get faster with your stroke. I took that to heart and when I am at HHT-3, I usually just do another 100 strokes on water which brings me up to HHT-4 and then I do 100 linen 100 latigo 100 horsehide bringing me to HHT-5 throughout. The thing about my Coticule is that I can do those hundreds of strokes (when needed) in about as much time as I can work through the progression on my synthetics. I'm not sure which is the "better" way, but I know I feel drawn to the Coticule over my synthetics (for the time being :D )

muscle memory......i think my arm will be honing when i sleep!! Im pretty chuffed since i only got my coticle on tuesday ...or weds - cant actually remember!

Once i have this dovo upto HHT 4/5 im leaving it well alone as its my main shaver :p

Im lookin forward to the arrival of sir bart's double arrows. I bought one for my dad as a gift for xmas - as it was such a good price for the quality!!! and also one for me to practice honing on regularly.

ahhh, the bloodflow has stopped again - lesson learnt - dont type with it:rolleyes:

ahhh the mention of the horsehide / latigo combo. Tony miller i presume? Ive heard about this on SRP and everyone seems to love it. I started on the illanois 127, which was ok, but mine has a defect in the bottom left near the handle which kinda warps it. I later bought a two sided leather strop which im still not really keen on the "better" leather side for stropping. and well, as the other side was supposedly more suited for pasting, thats what i did, but i really prefer the feel of that pasted side. DAMN IT! i think i like lots of draw rather to to sleek feeling.

I noticed some people raving about the SRD english bridal strop which took my fancy - anyone used it and able to rate it? Cant afford or justify a new strop for atleast 6 months......but i love stropping more so than honing (which i love even more now i have my coticule). Ha, infact my housemate at uni is convinced i do nothing BUT strop as pretty much everytime he comes in, there i am stropping away  .....i cant help it!

sorry if this thread has gone waaaaaaay of topic!

Superglue! works everytime, as long as you can get it dry with a clean tissue and pressure, then you will stop the flow long enough to drop some in the cut, close it up and hold it shut for a couple minutes and the jobs a good un! oh yeah the health and safety boys will tell you that superglue is poisonous so of course you didnt hear this from me...lol

Yes, Tony Miller strop. I'm also thinking about getting one of the SRD English Bridal strop, but like you, I'd like to hear some direct comparisons. :)

:w00t: That's what I keep thinking. Now that I have a good strop (which I'll talk about later ;) ) I should be able to keep a razor going for a looong time. Once I get one absolutely melt the whiskers away perfect I ain't touching it with the hone again!

You wont go wrong with a top end dovo canvas and leather jobbie, if you ask gary on here nicely he can get them trade

I highly recommend the Kanayamas. I just recieved mine and it is absolutely orgasmic! Keep an eye out for my review here in the next week.

 I'm the same! Everytime I walk by the strop I have to stop and give it 50-100. And it's gotten worse with this new strop.

i remember seeing somewhere on here that gary can get dovo stuff trade......hmmmm, when i have some cash i may indeed have to ask him nicely about another razor and possibly the strop :p is it a pretty decent one then?

James,
Paul is absolutly right on when it comes to pressure. You need to lighten the pressure as you progress from the original slurry through to the water only. What you should be feeling when you get to the end is just the very slight drag of the blade on the coti.

This is one of the hardest things to get use to, since you have been use to using more pressure up to this point. Just keep at it and pay more attention to what you are doing. One thing I find difficult is having ADD and honing on a coti, my mind can be in 5 different places and I sometimes lose track of where I am at. This doesn't happen on other stones because you don't use as many strokes. So when I get to the water stage, I have to really pay attention to what is going on, and even then I sometimes end up exactly where you are right now. So trust me, you are not alone.

Keep at it and take your time.

Tony's strops are excellent, I bought one of his "practice" strops a couple of years ago (when he used to sell practice strops as an item) and still have it... very nice draw.

I may be familiar with that two sided strop that you bought, I may have bought one too, it's very "slick", almost no draw, If you don't mind me asking, was it from a member of a shaving fourm?
