Problems with my new Wedge

I have a quarter hallow Polish razor and I was unable to get it to pop hair using the unicot method. I tried twice from the start and a couple of times when you apply the tape and did 30 laps, than fifty with water. I decided to use the TI paste and I used a 1 micron followed by a .25 and finished with Chromox. That did it and the blade was popping hairs like crazy. I didn't shave with it yet. I guess the shave is the true test so I will let you know after I shave with it.

i have and use TI paste and it realy does the trick i reckon thats all you would need . Even thought its rated 2micron so your progression would work

Hey guys,

Just shaved with the wedge last night. I actually got a decent shave this time. After not really getting anywhere I added an extra layer of tape and did the unicot method on it. It's not 'perfecT' but it's pretty darn good.

Hey Guys,

Just shaved with another razor. (an old Solingen SS razor modified by Seraphim) I used the unicot method on it. The shave was not bad, but not superb. The weird thing about it is that it started pretty well, but by the end it felt like it was significantly duller. I even stropped it and tried the HHT test again afterwards and it was a lot more noisy and grabby than before. Any thoughts? Should I start all the way back with no tape then tape (light slurry) then water or?

Thanks!

JF

when hht is grabier and you can actualy hear the hair snap rather than sever that is not what your want i would start again rather than guessing it won't harm. i would start agin do dilucot but start with a real milky slurry dilute and when slurry runs out finish on water or finish with unicot thats your choice

Surly an edge should last longer than half the shave... now, are you using low angles (spine almost touching the face)?
All other things being equal (that is to say,... you are not shaving "dry" and the razor is not a dud") high angles will kill most edges quickly, especially if you have a tough beard

Oh heck where did that come from?... It would appear my Spell-Check is working overtime.

Fixed.

Well after following your suggestion I decided to dull the razor and go back with the dilucot method. I got it to shave hair then proceeded to dilute the slurry until I was left with only water, then finished with only water, stroped and tested the blade. Well I don't know if my coticule isn't a proper one but the blade is 'shaving' arm hair, but certainly not popping hair or passing the HHT.

Oh eck!
where did your coti come from? I cant imagine it would not be a proper one?
Dont forget the Dilocut method takes some mastering, I tried myself on a Razor I have had no problems honing with unicot, and found it very hard to pass the hht, I will test shave it tomorrow and see how it goes, if I am not happy with the shave I will just tape the spine and go unicot for 30 on light slurry then 50-100 on plain water, That should bring the edge back no worries.

Also even a sharp pocket knife will shave arm hair, its not an indication of the razors ability to shave your face, rather it shows that the razor is ready to begin refining the edge.

I hope this helps and dont give up

thanks Ralfy! I got it from a shaving supplier here in Canada, Fendrihan.com
It's a fairly small stone so I might not be doing enough laps on it. I'm really regretting not getting a rectangular one now. I'm not sure, but I think it might be from the 'La Dressante' layer.

No worries Mate and good luck again
any chance of a pic of your coti?
in the meantime you could get this for $63 canook plus shipping or wait for sir bart to test the remaining items from the vaults, theres some wonderful specimens there, it may also be worth you sending your coti to a willing tester on here for assessment? just a thought

Or this one:

Please understand that no one needs to take my word for anything, but I didn't advice to replace that stone because I like to speak in exaggerations. It really will be very difficult to refine an edge to good keenness on a Coticule with such a shape. That has no further business with the properties of the hone itself. It's just very difficult to perform a good, efficient stroke that covers all of the edge on your diamond shaped Coticule.

I don't like pointing you to a Coticule. I may look as if I'm trying to sell that hone to you. Which I'm not. There's no profit in it for me and I don't care who buys a Coticule or not. I don't care whether a 1OO people on the Planet are using them or a 1000. I just try to offer support to those who like to use one. My advice it to buy only one. Small (within reason) or large, doesn't matter, as long as you have one long end to guide your stroke along. I know some people love to gather more than one, and that's of course fine with me. But it's not necessary to a smooth shaving edge on your razor(s).

N°1 is still available at Ardennes Coticule. It's a very easygoing stone. More so than n°11.

Best regards,
Bart.

Maybe my fellow canuck Dave has a stone to donate (sell). From what I hear he's got quite the collection there!

:D
