My King 1000/6000 is a great stone!
I only soak for a few minutes before honing, and I have a cheap diamond plate that I use to lap and raise a slurry at the same time.
I use it when sorting out an Ebay restore that's is dull as it comes or has chips to hone out. I find that I get a great result if I set the bevel with 1k + slurry then dilute to nothing, then I raise a slurry on the 6K side and dilute to nothing, then I head onto a finisher whether that be a Coti, Charnley or C12K. I don't have a synthetic finisher to compare but I don't find the King awkward to care for or use.
