kanayama strop.....the next

We don't use any softener at all for our laundry. I had to buy a bottle. Cost me 2 EUR. :)

I don't know about those sheets. This is all unexplored territory.

Kind regards,
Bart.
I don't know why that is funny to me but it is. Soupline fabric softener? Do you stand in a soup line to get it? I'll go away now. Make mine French onion. D

Can Dennis gain the moniker of "Forum Clown"?

I'm good on soup this morning. I'm just finishing up a bowl of atole.

I just hone a revisor up for a chap of badger and blade. hht 3 of the hone. I USED MY K LINEN and the leathers. the hht was good 3/4.not my best ever but still good.Any way i gave it a test shave, all i can say is the shave was silky smooth no irritation at all. for the linen from me. after the shave i restropped linen and leather and to my amazmant the hht is even better. i have now soaked mine twice in conditioner and it is seriously soft.

I've got atony miler linen / buffed horse hide on the way. you will love tm linen. But this k linen is much better now.

I have a Tony Miller genuine linen as well. What I particularly like better, is the thickness of the Kanayama linen. That thickness was a problem, because it translated to stiffness, but with that issue solved, it gives the strop an extra dimension. One that I like a lot. The performance is the same between my Dovo V-weave linen, the clogged side of my Tony Miller linen, the clean side that linen, the chemically softened Kanayama and the mechanically softened Kanayama.
I have extensively compared them HHT-wise, combining them with different leather strops, refinishing the razor with 50 laps on water in between trials. That definitely resets the HHT-readings. Performance wise there is zero difference to discern, with a 40/40 regime in the longer strops and 60/60 regime on the shorter components of the Dovo.

If I have t arrange them on comfort of use, which is a very personal affair, The chemically softened Kanayama wins, then the clogged Tony Miller, The Dovo V-weave (clogged at the factory), the mechanically softened Kanayama, and finally the clean Tony Miller linen.
If the Dovo had the dimensions of the Tony Miller linen, it would jump over it.
I don't doubt that many people would arrive at a different arrangement.

Kind regards,
Bart

I'm sure the tm linen is just more abarsive. thats why it seems to work very well. Now i have gotten use to the k linen its nice and seems like a thick piece of leather that is actauly linen. In my own mind i just have more confidence in my tm linen . Thats just mind over matter. I will use them all at some point in the rotaion.

The linen was hard as a board when it was soaking in the laundry softener, but after it completely dried the end result is amazing. It's like you say, almost feels like a leather strop. It's thick, soft, and has a light draw. Definitely worthy of the leather that it came with. Thanks everybody for pioneering this. I was afraid to mess with it, but I guess it's just a piece of fabric anyway, silly me.

Still not tried soaking my Kanayama linen yet!!!
I don't know why considering all the positive feedback. Bone idleness probably, so I'm going to do it first thing in the morning.
That way I'll have something to look forward to if United fail to win tomorrows derby against City. :-/

I finally had enough time at home to tweak the Kanayama linen. I just washed it a front loader with a little softener, dried it in the regular dryer and ironed it. It seemed to work much better, but I wasn't quite satisfied so soaked it in 50/50 fabric softener and water for 12 hours, rinsed it and ironed it. It was 100% better than the first massage. I bought a really cheap, stained, Claus at a local antique shop for absolutely nothing, honed it on the venerable Les Latneuses and stropped it up on the Kanayama. Gary would call it magical. I would call it super efficient with no chance of nicking oneself.

Thanks, Bart, for all the testing you did to this linen. I haven't put any additive on mine and it is still a pleasure to use. I would not have gone this route if it were not for you, but would have sanded the surface instead. It was both smoother and very efficient. I do test off the linen most of the time and it upped the HHT the expected point. I have now reassembled my K50K with the linen and not the suede "middle" leather I got from Gary and will use this system right up there with Torbo's. Thanks again.

Your smart-ass (kissing) friend, Denny

it makes a nice differance , glad its much nicer for you to use now. I've been using mine for over two weeks now. I went back to my tm linen just to strop a razor honed on my new lv just to be sure as this is my normal routine. I actauly felt that my tm linen felt more course than my k linen. Its defanatley what you get to adapt to. My k linen feels and sounds the same as tm soft cotton. It was to stiff when new but the softner softend mine . Once properly dryed mine felt even softer.

I've been debating a Kanayama for some time now. Does anyone own a Dubl Duck cordovan strop to compare? I recently acquired a very nice DD cordovan and love it. Just wondering if the Kanayama is very similar to what I have as is.

Sorry for digging up this thread, but I'm waiting to have my 50K Kanayama strop delivered, and after reading through these pages I plan to soak it in fabric softener as well.

I would like to know how those who went through this procedure protected the leather grip on the linen, or did you soak it as well? I'm a bit afraid to alter or destroy the grip....

Anyway, many thanks for this experiment, it really made me decide to go for the Kanayama!

Best Regards,

Mr. B

B,

Don't worry. The leather grip will survive this soaking.

Regards,
Urmas

Not to doubt Urmas advice, but when I soaked these linens, I made a roll leaving the last bit extended, so they would look like a "d". I used a small cup, in which I could put the roll with the extended bit upwards. I filled the cup to submerge the roll but not the extended bit wih the leather piece. Capillarity made the extended part wet as well, but the surface of the leather stayed dry.
The leather is glued to the linen, but the soaking in softener did not affect the glue bond.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Thank you, Urmas and Bart, for your input.
I think I'll go with the "d-roll" technique.

The strop just arrived this morning. What a beauty, and the leather is incredible to touch! Can't wait for the next shave...

Best regards,

B
