Prices of stones in the Vault

I've brought a whole bunch of Coticules back home, for further expansion of the Vault.

I can't wait it. Yesterday it looked like I was late a few days to make my long lasting dream come true  , but today I read the thread till the end and I've got a second wind. B)

BTW, congratulations to tat2Ralfy for the splendid purchase. Combo of such size is the one I'm also dying for. And my Anna also promised to aid my budget if need be.

Thank you Maro
indeed without the "nod" from my Alicia #10 would have been lost to me, now i can look forward to using what appears to be a perfect example (I know they all are) for a lifetime to come

And a big thanks has to go to Sir Bart, for giving us the unique chance to buy these stones complete with a professional evaluation!

Not exactly. They're almost all bouts size 8. Meaning that the longer ones (up to 24cm) are all narrower than your preferred width of 5cm. And the wider ones are all shorter, more in the neighborhood of 15 cm.
I consider all of them having excellent size for hassle free sharpening of razors. The narrowest ones perhaps require a bit of experience to keep the razor in balance, but they have the advantage to be great for smiling edges and even better for razors with some warp in the blade.

Most members seemed to prefer cheaper hones, so I searched hard to select bouts of good dimensions.

Stock of large rectangular hones is limited, because they can't really keep up with demand at Ardennes. Upon interest I could assess a few larger ones, next batch.

Best regards,
Bart.

Well, as you were so kind to offer that opportunity, here you are:
I'm interested in the larger one (~20cm x ~7cm), combo (2 for price of 1  ), close to rectangular (yeah, I know, tat2Ralfy took one already). :)
You mentioned in one of your posts that (according to the guys in Ardennes) the demand for "ornamental" coticules is rather limited. Maybe you will be able to find some nice piece for me with this unique charm that commercial resellers impassively reject?

I will look for one next time I pay a visit to Ardennes Coticule, but I can't make any promises. 20cm X 7cm is very large, and natural combos of that size are not that very common. Currently they are extracting rocks from the Quarry of Ol Preu. That quarry offers limited supply of large chunks of Coticule. When the autumn rainfalls start flooding the quarry, they cease activity over there and start extractions in the mine at Regné, till next spring/summer. They have good hope to dig up suitable raw rocks for the production of larger hones. So I was told by Maurice, the owner of Ardennes.

At Regné they don't have access to the wide variety of layers of Ol'Preu. Not because these layers are not present, but because it take tremendous resources, both financial and in labor, to carve the necessary galleries.

I don't expect to see hones like n°10 very often.

Bart,
I wouldn't dare to take your offer as a promise.
All I'm hoping for is a kind favour you could possibly do to me. :)

I didn't mean it has to be of that exact size.
Something between 18-20 x 6-7[sup]+[/sup] will make me completely happy (you know, this is just that bit of luxury you mentioned in The Main FAQ). ;)

C'est la vie.
I will either be lucky or not. B)

i defanatley will be wanting another coticule but a nice thin one for warped or slightly smiling blades not sure what width . What width would you recomend bart i was thinking About 3cm would be idesl is there any in that width aprox? if so i would like to reserve one once you tested it so long as it cuts fairly well with slurry.

Check n°9. It 's an excellent one. I don't know how long Ardennes wil hold on to it.

Furthermore, keep an eye on n°17, 20 and 21. All narrow ones.
N°17, might be taken. Someone already asked about it, but I have not had the chance for thorougly testing ir.

N°16, yesterdays interesting case, could be used on its narrow side, because it's 2X coticule. If you will, I'll try it for you that way, and see how well it works. I have one of 15mm wide myself, that I used for severely warped razors.

Hey Sir Bart
any chance of you scoping out the prices for the new stones?
No, not yet. I'm only bothering Maurice with asking prices, when I can send him a complete list of all hones with their sizes and peculiarities.

All I know for now, is that the majority of the new hones qualify as bout size 8, which are currently listed at €42 at Ardennes' website.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Hello Bart,

I'm a little late to the game. Is #2 still available? If I understand correctly they are back at the place of origin and may be out of your control?

regards,
jeff

N°2 is currently pending for sales.

N°1, n°5 and n°8 are still available at Ardennes. If you're interested in purchasing one of those, just let me know and I'll contact Ardennes on your behalf.
Once the sale is made, I mark them sold.

The hones with a number greater than 10, will be made available for purchase once I return them to Ardennes.

They're all excellent Coticules, so please don't think you can only choose from left-overs. If you have extremely sensitive skin, go with n°8. If you want easy results with a miminum of practice and experience, get n°1. If you have little patience, go with n°5. :)

Welcome to Coticule.be, Jeff,

Bart.

Say Bart, if you get one in with a very strange pattern, like the spotted one which is sold already. Could you put me on the list in any way? Nothing urgent however :)
