Questions about a hanging strop...

Hello Guys & Gentlemen (guess you're both! ;))

I have in my shaving equipement, a paddle strop I use on leather (no crox since I know this place...)

And since I've read about canvas, I use a piece of jean, coming from old pants. (and that works pretty fine...)

So I'm gettind used with stropping, & I like that!

I'm now thinkin' about buying a hanging strop, or having one made by a member of CCC (who really does good stuff, and can make custom on demand)

But there is still a question I don't get the answer :

Some strops like the dovo (just an example), have the linen attached to the leather, with only one handle or D-ring :

Some other have separate leather and linen with two handle or D-ring, like the neil miller for example :

neilmi10.jpg

Last but not least, on some other, the linen seems to do a big ring, with leather on a part of it (like this prima rindeler) :

So my question is : is there any fundamental difference between those shapes?

I guess, with only one handle, you return the strop when you swith betwenn linen and leather. But with 2 D-rings, do you first hang only one ring (linen), then leather? or do you always hang the 2 rings togeteher?

This may not change things a lot, maybie I'm asking myself questions for nothing (i guess the action on te edge is similar, and depends more on the material's quality), but as there are three different shapes, I'm wondering what can be theyr impact on the strop holding...

(hope I'm still clear...)

I have the second and third, I don't think the first one is a very good option since you don't have a linnen.

As for the second one I just grab one of the ring(I have handles but that's essentially the same)strop on canvas then take the other and strop on leather.

As for preference between the last 2 there's not much difference I prefer the second choice of the 2 strops I have but that's because it a bit longer than the other.
The only advantage I may see is that you could easier change the leather or the linnen on the second choice but I really don't see the need for that.

I hope this makes sense to you
Kind regards
Stijn

Yes Stijn, you're right, the firts I show is a without linen one... but some strop are made with the linen "glued"? or sewed to the leather, or sometimes there is a scratch to put the linen on the leather side, so you only got one strap, with one leather side, and one linen side...

But, I'm pretty sure that doesn't change thing much, but wanted some opinions...

there is no differance , its just personal preferance. i like both. i have both styles. I like the idea of just spinning around leather to reverse straight on to the linen, with the dovo.

the seperates are the most traditional. if the leather get damaged it can be changed as stinj says .

i have the invisable edge super tanned leather . Bestroke customed mad. with linen stook, glued to the back. trust me it does not work very well. the leather is amazing stuff. i'd say one of the best built strops i have had, i wished the linen was seperate.

You wished it was separate... why? Because it's easier to use onlu linen, then only leather? Or is there another reason, or personnal convenience?

And when they are separate, is there any need to hold them together (holding the 2 D-rings together), or do you just have to use one (nor linen or leather), letting the other hanging down?

you can just take one and let the other hang

Ok! ;)

Thank you all, I think I'm gonna choose a "traditionnal separate" one, as I like their look!

I'll tell you, and even post pics when I get It, but that's not an urge...

i just let the other one hang down. reason why is . the linen being glued to the back. cups so the razor does'nt keep on the surface flat. there is no give at all its to hard a surface. Its just not a stropple able surface to stiff no movemant. the leather side is better as the leather is nice and soft. i have that side nice and flat. the linen side is not, it just does'nt work. the linen needs to fit onto the razor . as the surface is so rigid it carn't do that. so seperate for me is way better in that way. tony miller is releasing some nice horse hide /linen strops soon. his strops are so supple from new and strop very nice . you carn't go wrong with one of his.

I have both the dovo and two with separate parts, when I use the separate ones I do not let the part I am not using simply hang down, as I find the stropping action makes it move and I can feel it, instead I hold it with my little finger, and use my thumb to hold and tension the part I am using, this feels much nicer for me

With the ones that have the cloth part bonded on the back of the leather, as Gary said they simply don't feel right, the cloth cannot move in a natural way, as the leather is far less supple

P.s IMHO for the money the dovo one you pictured is top notch

And I will just agree that the Tony Miller strops are very very nice too ;) ( a thousand thanks to Sir Gary)

I think there is much ado about a lot of nothing when it comes to differences between strops. I have found that small strops suck tremendously. I have also found that if latigo is the answer, you are asking the wrong question; latigo is cheap, and like almost all cheap things, they become expensive when you, inevitably, upgrade to something decent. As for the non-leather component, I simply don't like webbed fabric (I don't care if it works better than anything else, it looks, feels and sounds tacky), and most linens I have tried disappoint (my favourite so far being Torolf's linen).

In a perfect world, I would have a separate, 3" wide extra long leather strop and a matching, separate linen strop. The combo strops with thick handles have a tendency for the unused part to dangle around - nothing major, just not quite perfect. One day, maybe.

In the meantime, some strop porn.

The dovo with the white linen is one of the finest factory strops. The only drawback is must be wrapped in the membrane the leather to clean the linen.Recently i received a strop from Torolf. It is sewn just like Dovo double face . For my opinion is one of the best strops i tried. The leather due to oil tanned is extremely soft allowing the blade resting everywhere and equally.A secret is to clean the edge by alcohol if you want to read the HHT after stopping ,because the thin oily film which remain on the edge gives a false indication. After some use will be not needed. As the narrower hones give better results, the same happens with the narrower strops applying x strokes on them.
Best regards
Emmanuel
