Come off it we all know Chris is only pretending to be married, remember Norman Bates and his "Mother" :p

That's right, Inky! But don't forget..... [sub]I know where you live too....[/sub]:scared:

If this keeps up, I might have to auction her off to the highest bidder, but that would be in violation of the TOU
Shipping to Europe would kill ya though.
She works hard, can throw up an igloo in 20 minutes, pull the car outa the ditch and chop a cord of wood in an hour. Good with livestock, but not small children.
No refund, and all sales final.

nah, but she puts a killer edge on an axe. But if you think she's hot, you should see her sister:

Question yes / no
Do you quite often feel the urge to buy razors when you are low or depressed? (_)
Do you get a high from buying razors? (_)
Do you frequently walk away from an online store with many more razor purchases than you had intended to make? (_)
Are your credit cards almost to their limit or maxed out? (_)
Are you unable to resist a sale or bargain? (_)
Do you ignore family or work responsibilities so you can buy or restore razors? (_)
Do you try to hide your purchases or even lie about them to family and loved ones? (_)
Do you buy a lot of shaving related things that you end up not even using? (_)
Do you feel a sense of guilt or shame after some of your shopping sprees? (_)
Do you go on buying binges which you feel are beyond your control? (_)
Do you quite often buy things that you know you cannot afford? (_)
Would you rather shop than engage in other hobbies or recreational activities? (_)
Seriously. Try answering these questions.

I did. I didn't score a single 'YES'.
I sometimes feel guilty if I buy anything, but that is because I only spend money on razor related stuff that I earned for restoring or making a razor. And since I don't make much money that way, I am very concious about what I spend it on. However, I never have shopping sprees, so I still answered no to that one.

Consecutively, my rotation of shaveready razors is small, though I always make sure I have a couple of interesting things in my restoration pile. I don't hoard or collect, but I am always on the lookout for a Lancet (even though some people call them ugly as sin :D)

I do agree that people bragging about their ebay haul are sometimes rather sad, like they won a hard won battle instead of just throwing good money after bad. Granted, sometimes someone wins something that is worth bragging about, but usually not.

You see, Bruno, it is all nice and dandy you telling us that you don't have that problem. Unfortunately, you admin one of the forums that actively encourages the behaviour you find sad by your own admission. But, well, Bruno, you know... the difference being that your IQ is above some of your peers. Let me tell you the story of the little Duckie that went for USD 401.66 the way I see it. Let's define some stuff we need later first:
  1. [li]Attention whore: An insecure person that is so emotionally unstable and needy, that they have to constantly be coddled and be the center of attention in any given situation. Or a person that is so insecure about their own intelligence and the above average intelligence of everyone in the room, that they constantly need to talk out of their ass about stupid random things that nobody cares about, constantly giving little factoids about the same subject(and the only one they know about) over and over and over and over again, as well as speaking in an overwhelmingly loud voice to overpower anyone else that cares to get a word in. All while being hilariously unaware that everyone in the room takes a deep sigh and rolls their eyes when this person starts to speak.[/li]
[li]acquisitionitis: the disease of desiring to acquire.[/li]
Now we got that out of the way, let's take a random example of the above in action:

  • [li]A: "I recently purchased a very decent quality goldedge dubl duck razor from an antique shop and at the time with little experience was happy with what I saw so i purchased it for $30.00."[/li]
[li]B: Welcome to SRP, honestly we are all going to smile and act friendly right now, but we are all secretly very jealous and are wondering why some lucky so and so newbie scored a DD Goldie in great shape for $30 and we did not... See if the razor gods were at all fair we would have found that razor not you.[/li]
And then along comes Bruno, unwaveringly denying the effect of such exchanges between beginners and so called senior moderators (and vendors). Well, here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-STRAIGHT-RAZOR-WONDEREDGE-DUBL-DUCK-VERY-NICE-/. Something to be proud of, really, encouraging beginners to buy mind numbingly overpriced export quality razors with a 90% guarantee of being heavily defective (good if you restore commercially, not quite so good if you just spent a truckload of hard earned cash on one of these toys).

Kind regards,
Robin

What just happened?
I was replying to Robin and suddenly his post is gone.

Anyhow, I don't agree with all things that are posted on SRP. I think that should be clear. And I can't really change what people post (as long as they stay within the rules) without becoming a dictator, and that sounds like too much work.

A couple of pet peeves are people who boast about their disorders and mental weakness as if it was a mark of worth, people bragging about overpriced ebay purchases and people who post things like 'what a steal' and 'not if I see it first'. Oh and I share Robins sentiment about people who use terms like cotis, thurris, Jnats, and other cute names.

I re-read it and felt it was a bit unfair towards SRP. A forum should not be held responsible for its users.

What you can do, though, is lead by example. Not you personally, mind you.

The funny thing is, things were a lot better around the time I joined SRP. Mind you, that was back when custom scales were rare, and the user base much smaller. The forum still works well for many people, and I think that is great. I did not agree with certain developments, and therefore left, but that was just my personal preference. I am more interested in research and understanding how stuff works than funky scales - to each their own ;)

However, you can see the same development in other forums, too. Personally, I have come to the conclusion that aggressive vendors are at fault. Mixing hobby and business is almost never a good idea. And I cannot blame a vendor for promoting their products. But - and again, this is nothing specific to SRP, but a general problem - if you let vendors run a social community, they will inevitably use it as a sales vehicle. And that, in turn, leads to crackdowns on anyone threatening their market niche. No need to go into any details, but B&B has a long history of eliminating users at random who disagreed with the custom maker du jour.

A lot of what I felt was a great hobby has been banalised, vulgarised, and commercialised by a small group of people. I think that is just sad.

Regards,
Robin

It is good to see such a strident person with the integrity and self evaluation to back up every now and then, Robin. I couldn't agree with you more about the commercial aspects of some sites.

At first I didn't understand the furvor with which the associates policed Marketplace, but I surely do now. It seems perfectly ok to me for vendors to have their own, quiet spot and leave the rest of the territory for the enthusiast without an agenda. The associates have done a good job with this, in my opinion. I very seldom visit other sites and when I do, it feels very foreign to me. There are those who pose as indisputable experts(honed thousands of razors this morning) and those that fawn over them. I have never posted.

As for shortcut names, Bruno, for coticules or Japanese naturals, I just don't like to type that much. And how far do you take it. Should we use the scientific name for each geological specimen? Are text acronyms too much? No IMHO, at least now that I understand some of them.

For the jerks out there who post about inappropriate topics--they are just jerks. The world is full of them and there seem to be fewer here than other sites I have visited, though I haven't really given them a fair shot.

From a relative newbie to straight razor forums, there seems to be quite a lot of energy flowing between the sites. Not all is positive by any means.

In short, man (bird) will always flock with his own feather and will fight with his brothers while doing it. To find a little sanctuary from that is about all one can hope.

With another boring post, Denny
