Question yes / no Do you quite often feel the urge to buy razors when you are low or depressed? (_) Do you get a high from buying razors? (_) Do you frequently walk away from an online store with many more razor purchases than you had intended to make? (_) Are your credit cards almost to their limit or maxed out? (_) Are you unable to resist a sale or bargain? (_) Do you ignore family or work responsibilities so you can buy or restore razors? (_) Do you try to hide your purchases or even lie about them to family and loved ones? (_) Do you buy a lot of shaving related things that you end up not even using? (_) Do you feel a sense of guilt or shame after some of your shopping sprees? (_) Do you go on buying binges which you feel are beyond your control? (_) Do you quite often buy things that you know you cannot afford? (_) Would you rather shop than engage in other hobbies or recreational activities? (_)
You see, Bruno, it is all nice and dandy you telling us that you don't have that problem. Unfortunately, you admin one of the forums that actively encourages the behaviour you find sad by your own admission. But, well, Bruno, you know... the difference being that your IQ is above some of your peers. Let me tell you the story of the little Duckie that went for USD 401.66 the way I see it. Let's define some stuff we need later first:Bruno said:I do agree that people bragging about their ebay haul are sometimes rather sad, like they won a hard won battle instead of just throwing good money after bad. Granted, sometimes someone wins something that is worth bragging about, but usually not.
Now we got that out of the way, let's take a random example of the above in action:
- [li]Attention whore: An insecure person that is so emotionally unstable and needy, that they have to constantly be coddled and be the center of attention in any given situation. Or a person that is so insecure about their own intelligence and the above average intelligence of everyone in the room, that they constantly need to talk out of their ass about stupid random things that nobody cares about, constantly giving little factoids about the same subject(and the only one they know about) over and over and over and over again, as well as speaking in an overwhelmingly loud voice to overpower anyone else that cares to get a word in. All while being hilariously unaware that everyone in the room takes a deep sigh and rolls their eyes when this person starts to speak.[/li]
[li]acquisitionitis: the disease of desiring to acquire.[/li]
And then along comes Bruno, unwaveringly denying the effect of such exchanges between beginners and so called senior moderators (and vendors). Well, here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-STRAIGHT-RAZOR-WONDEREDGE-DUBL-DUCK-VERY-NICE-/. Something to be proud of, really, encouraging beginners to buy mind numbingly overpriced export quality razors with a 90% guarantee of being heavily defective (good if you restore commercially, not quite so good if you just spent a truckload of hard earned cash on one of these toys).
[li]A: "I recently purchased a very decent quality goldedge dubl duck razor from an antique shop and at the time with little experience was happy with what I saw so i purchased it for $30.00."[/li]
[li]B: Welcome to SRP, honestly we are all going to smile and act friendly right now, but we are all secretly very jealous and are wondering why some lucky so and so newbie scored a DD Goldie in great shape for $30 and we did not... See if the razor gods were at all fair we would have found that razor not you.[/li]
I re-read it and felt it was a bit unfair towards SRP. A forum should not be held responsible for its users.Bruno said:???
What just happened?
I was replying to Robin and suddenly his post is gone.
What you can do, though, is lead by example. Not you personally, mind you.Bruno said:Anyhow, I don't agree with all things that are posted on SRP. I think that should be clear. And I can't really change what people post (as long as they stay within the rules) without becoming a dictator, and that sounds like too much work.
The funny thing is, things were a lot better around the time I joined SRP. Mind you, that was back when custom scales were rare, and the user base much smaller. The forum still works well for many people, and I think that is great. I did not agree with certain developments, and therefore left, but that was just my personal preference. I am more interested in research and understanding how stuff works than funky scales - to each their ownBruno said:A couple of pet peeves are people who boast about their disorders and mental weakness as if it was a mark of worth, people bragging about overpriced ebay purchases and people who post things like 'what a steal' and 'not if I see it first'. Oh and I share Robins sentiment about people who use terms like cotis, thurris, Jnats, and other cute names.
