kanayama strop.....the next

I've tryed several strops and the kanayama leather is the best i ever tryed. perfect draw . It reminds me of my hybrid coticule. The magnetic feel, the leather has is the same as my hybrid coticule.

i dont doubt that the kanayama lather is the best of the world.If the linen would be like my replaced one if you like the effectivity of the mentined, however the k linen is more beatiful,
I belive that there would be no competitor.

I think "best in the world" is a very relative term. I have tried the 30 and 50k Kanayama strops, and liked the draw of my Old Traditional better. Generally speaking, I do not like strops without handles, but that is a different story entirely. That said, I find the Kanayama strops truly beautiful to look at. ;)

Hm, and I just got a piece of Torolf's leather in to retrofit with SRD hardware. I will report back after it has been broken in thoroughly, but I already feel that it is up there with the other high class strop leathers.

Congratulations. I've been waiting on mine since the beginning of October after hearing the first of November that it shouldn't be long... I don't expect to ever experience any of his strops because I requested a refund today for my downpayment :thumbdown:
 
Last few days I was working on my K linen to soften it little bit.
I used similar technique as Bart did with hands and there was little bit improvement. Last night I finally decide to wash the linen in warm water with some laundry conditioner. I did it by hands not machine wash. After that I let it dry and today K linen is seems to be completly break in. It is very soft and there is not such noise when stroping like it was before this process.
But be careful if you plan to do machine wash especially with hot water. My linen was 60 cm long before washing it (again I must said that water was warm, not hot) and after this process it downsized for about 5% (now it is about 57 cm long and few mm less in width).

Mine shortened too with washing. That and Bart's folding recommendation made my linen very nice. I prefer it over my Tony Miller linen now.
 
If it is good enough for you, Jared, I will definitely condition mine. I am still using the Dovo almost every time. It has a wonderful sticky feel I like. I think it is the chalky paste they use to level it out, like Bart says. Rock on, Hippie.

I would recommend trying the folding by itself first, though. The washing did shorten mine, although the strop was covered in Dovo white paste. So, I wanted to wash it anyway.
 
I'll have to try to wash mine as well. I've tried Bart's method and it helped a lot. I'm currently still searching for my perfect linen strop. I have 3-4 right now (TM280 wool, Ambrose, a beat up 2inch Vintage blade Webbed fabric and the kanayama)

The only one that is really performing to my standards at the moment is the webbed fabric material. It's very plain and cheap, but mine was purchased used and the previous owner (a newb) made a few scratches. I would love to get a new one (they're pretty cheap) but shipping costs from SRD to Canada would cost me more than the price of the strop itself..

Maybe this latest solution will give me the perfect strop! Fingers crossed!
 
I must say that I little bit modified Bart's method. Instead of using hand to fold linen on the table I use iron (wool program, not so hot not so cold). After that linen already was much more softer but real job was with washing in conditioner.
 
I just used shaving lather and the very hard water that we have around here (with its lovely trace amounts of uranium).
 
Lot's of interesting stuff going on here. I didn't get around washing mine yet. Too busy.
Jean-François, be careful with steam. Shrinkage will be maximum with hot steam.

I just shortened the leather on mine since its a nameless vintage Japanese strap I got basically for free.
 
Thanks for the tip Bart! I'll stick with a light hand wash with laundry detergent then. Oh and I also tried the chalk trick on one of my strops. Unfortunately it seems to have made it even worst.
