Torbens Razor arrived today

Marek ...Yeahh..think you`re right..and it will be a bit difficult to hone with two tennis balls glued onto the spine
I was rather thinking of a kind of polymer clay, with which you could form additional "heaps" on both sides of the spine along the entire blade, to make it of a wedge shape.
But this would only help you to hone the blade firmly with the very edge touching the stone.
No matter what, you'd never get the desired 17[sup]o[/sup] angle that way.
Even (or especially, I should say) if you glue golf, tennnis or football balls onto the spine.

Hi Ralfy

So the old lady arrived from its tour. And now I know how to spend the long winter evenings ;-)

Thanx again for trying Ralfy....

Got a bit agressive and took it to the sanding belt...after about 10 mins. of delicate work, with my fingers measuring the temperature of the metal..ouchhhh,it started taking shape: The barrel profile is _nearly_ gone and the spine has been corrected according to symetrical specs. well...somehow..At least its a good start: No blue`ish metal, metal has been remowed at the right places, and she slimmed a lot..

Way to go Torben  watch the heat as I am more than sure you are aware, I just know that hiding in the little pot belly is the slimmest sexiest blade

Now it`s time to abandon the sanding belt..as the blade slim`s up heat is becomming a problem. Switched to a 250 grit whetstone and after spending a couple of hours - on and off- I`d say that 5-6 hours more would help, and then the next thing will be 400 grit sanding paper..and loads off it.It really is a solid piece of extremely hard metal!!

After some hours of sanding and honing it`s finally having something like an edge..Used 5 layers of tape and honed away for a _long_ time. Now it shaves hairs of my arm but it still needs quite a lot of work to get shave ready.. so I think it`s time to give it a rest...it aint THAT funny :|
But things did turn out like I had hoped. This is the first wedge I`ve honed so I`ll need to learn how to do it right..

Thanx Bart ...I did see the calculator at some time but could`nt find it again.

Will try it out later. This was just a kinda pre-honing test :) Decided to wait for the coti to show up and give it a try on that..offcourse after honing all the other razors first:thumbup:

+1 from me on the 5 layers, its my experience that anymore than 3 layers can really start to create problems
Go Torben Go

Yeahhh...You`re all right ;-) But by now my arms are tired and my fingers hurts!
So I`ll leave it for a while... wont be doing any honing until the coti arrives.

Damn I cant wait!!!!!!!!!!! And two(?) DA`s from Bart will be comming as well .....Oh happy days... Praise the Lord..bwahahahah ..:p

And its a beautiful looking thing

However, honing it is beyond me, see the photo's below and the contact area with 3 layers of tape on, this had me baffled for a while, and I did consider working it on the 400 grit and then repolishing and honing, but that commitment is beyond me at this time,

Whats doing it is the blade profile, its beyond a wedge, with a definite barrel out in the center of the blade

My only idea would be to lap it flat on the 400 grit then repolish and hone the now true wedge blade, alas again that kind of commitment is beyond me at this time, so its bad news for Torben although to be fair someone here may have a better plan, or Torben may be happy to spend the time it needs on the stones before a repolish and hone

What do you think guys??

OK, I need to ask some questions. I know this is a little late, but I need to ask anyways.

Looking at Ralfy's photo, the one with the caliper, I see that the middle of the blade is higher than the spine. Now how could that happen and the middle of the blade still be higher? I don't see any grinding in the middle part of the blade. Was this razor a Chinese or Pakistani throw away or is it a well known manufacturer?

Ray

No Ray its a circa 200 year old beauty, by F, Fenny Tally Ho!
we put it down to some twat not knowing what they were at, and by the time I got it Torben had made a wonderful job of polishing the blade so there was no evidence to go at, maybe Torben can shed a little more light on it?

BTW? see the cut on the end of my finger...Ouch! hahaha

Hi Ray..

I think that no one was able to figure out what`s happend to the ol` gail...
It was,as you saw on Ralfy`s picture,a lot thicker at the middle of the blade. I assumed it was how it was made but that seems very unlikely. On the other hand I cant imagine why anyone would spend time and effort on honing it this way...Bart believs it was done by a knifemaker and that might be the most likely reason.

When I got it,it was completely covered with rust so it was sanded down with 400-800-1200-1500 and 2000 grit whetpaper, then polished on a hard felt wheel and finally polished with Autosol and Brasso...

So now it`s been lapped down, first it was taken to the belt sander for the roughest work -very carefull offcourse-then a 250 grit whetstone,400 and 800 grit whetpaper but after a short test honing it´s clear that it still needs more steel to be removed puhhhh.....

So that`s how it is at this point.`

Torben,
Before you get too carried away with grinding, go to Bart's chart and get the measurements and plug them in see how many pieces of tape you will need once you have sanded enough down to be able to hone the razor.

If it ends up being more than 5 pieces, well then you have some decisions to make. If, however, it is less, than you have eliminated one more issue you might have.

Just a thought.

Ray

Hmmm...tried the calculator and it said one layer of tape..But I do not have the right tools for measuring correctly so it`s an estimate and not a very good one. But I`ll give it a try with one layer but I`m sure it will hone the middle of the blade...but then I`ll know how to spend a few more hours..:|

But I still do not understand WHY anyone would hone it like this : () instead of this : v
That is completely beyond my understanding...I`d say it has been left for several decades which means honing most likely was done by hand, without machinery ...and that has been quite a task.

I saw a gent who crafted a razor with a convex grind. It looked really cool, but I sure wouldn't want to try to hone it :-/

In my opinion, if you want to make this razor serviceable, you'll need to grind a minimal concavity into the blade, such as present in all "wedges" I ever saw. A geometrically true wedge is nearly impossible to hone, at least: up to today's standards.

My offer still stands...:)

Bart.

Bart...you got me and you know it;-) Damn...damn..
I``ll most kindly accept your offer...ouch that hurt..ouchhhhh

So by now I`m feeling as a 8 year old boy....being corrected by his teacher..And thats just how it should be.

As we had much snow ..and even a earthquake!..I didnt make it to the post office yesterday...so will try again tommorow ..a W&B and..erhmmmmm ..cough..a Tally Ho...erhh yes..enough said..

Thanks Bart,dont tell anyone ;-)
