Torbens Razor arrived today

I can make this whole thread vanish of the website in the blink of an eye...;)

[warn]Unless one of the wise guys chose to copy and paste it into his own personal archive, just in case it ever needed reposting

Bwhahahahahahaha Bwhahahahahahaha[/warn]

Torben,

There's no need for embarrassment. A brave man always tries. And a wise man knows when to ask assistance. You have distinguished yourself at both qualities, and I salute you for that.

Dealing with that razor is a matter of tools. Without access to some power assisted tools for regrinding and polishing it all the way up to a shiny mirror again, I wouldn't consider for one split second to work on that razor.

Please understand that I am not an accomplished razorsmith. I have done this before (somewhere I have pictures of one of those make-overs, I'll post one later), and I think I can bring it to a good end. But I don't make any formal promise.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Thanx Bart...

I`m sure you will do the best you can...and that is more than anyone can ask for.

And you`re right...it`s an allmost hopeless task without the right tools,at least that was my experience:rolleyes:
Took a look at the Tormek...nice piece of machinery you got there!

Good luck...and take all the time you need..
Will you let me know when the razors arrive?

Best regards
Torben

Torben,

Here's a picture of a Jules Dirlam, that went through the procedure I have in mind for your Tally Ho.

Absolutely smooth, Torben.

Sorry for a late reply. I'm working hard to put the website on a new server. (We're crossing the 5Gbyte/month traffic limit each month now). I Spend the entire night yesterday to figure out eventually that the upgraded hosting account, actually is a downgrade from PHP version 5.2.9 to 5.1.6 . A simple explanation some parts of the website refused to run (including the forum), because it does require PHP 5.2.

But yes the Tally Ho is done. And the beer arrived today.
It's not a perfect job, I've been experimenting with 3M bristle discs on a variable speed jewelers lathe, to polish razors. I either lack patience, or the discs lack abrasion to replace scratches on hardened steel within an acceptable time frame. I should order grease-less compounds to find out.
Anyway, the polish on the blade is not too bad, yet far from excellent.
Also, the grind is not that of a trained professional, and that turns up as slight unevenness in the bevel faces.
I managed to get a pretty good tang-blade transition (a "shoulder" if you like to call it that way:rolleyes: ), on the side that holds the stamp. It did not turn out equally well on the other side, that has a more sloping transition.

But, it was fun doing, and it saved a razor that would have otherwise been lost.
I'll send it back tomorrow, or on Wednesday, whenever I find time to go to the post office this week.

Kind regards,
and thanks again for the beer.

Bart.

Uhhh that was really tough luck Sir Bart...
And passed the 5GB per month limit..It seems like this place is growing
Though I`m glad it still is a small place with familiar faces.

And as for the beers:

The Limfjordsporter is ..well a porter.. and a very strong and spicy one. It really is on the heavy side and might need some kind of aquired taste.

The other one is spiced with porse (cant find a translation for that) a spice often used in schnapps. Gives a very unusual taste.

Thanks for taking all that time and effort working on the Tally Ho,that was very kind of you. I sure hope you did have fun doing it and learned a trick or two on the way;)
And as I like straights with a history I`m very happy that you managed to save it. It really is something special holding a near 200 year old pice of tool in your hands. It`s got the same kind of soul as a coticule

Thanks again Sir Bart.ohhh and just send it back when you got the time.

Regards gents.

I wrote the provider an e-mail. He promised me they'd upgrade the PHP to meet the demands. Hope that 'll be the last hurdle.

Don't worry. I'm Belgian. We're born with an acquired taste when it comes to beer specialties.

"Porse" is Myrtle. In Dutch, we call it "gagel". It's a common ingredient in historic beers, because before Hop was discovered and used for its taste and natural preservative properties, they used a mixture of herbs for that purpose. Myrtle was an important ingredient of that mixture. Here's an example of a Belgian beer, based on that tradition:

I'm not sure how much of the soul I've grind away...:-/
But yes, it was a pleasure, and I'm glad the razor is shaving well.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Btw...those 3M discs does look very handy...maybe it`s worth a try for those tiny scratches that cant be felt but tends to get very visible after polishing...

Thats just what I use, 80,150, and 180 grit soft cotton mops, on a pillar drill so it doesnt run too fast, then 3 polishing compounds and a hand polish with "Peek" to finish
