Prices of stones in the Vault

The list in the first post of this thread is updated.
All names that have made reservations for the current batch have been sent to Ardennes.
They will contact you guys shortly.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. So does this mean that I don't have to confirm my intent to buy, and Ardennes will contact me now? If it's still needed, I confirm my intent.

Also, I was wondering if Ardennes handles the exchange rate themselves or if it's done by Paypal or my credit card or whatever. If anyone can shed some light on the process, it would be greatly appreciated.

When you say you want a stone, Bart notes the reservation. Then, you confirm your intent to buy, which in prior experience has always been required prior to him returning the stones to Ardennes. Then, you get an email from Rob (both times I bought) with a total, and then I've always just paid with PayPal. Pretty simple, but don't get too anxious waiting on them to contact you. They will get to it within a week or so :)

I'm really drowning in work, so I decided to take a shortcut and skip the confirmation round. Previous rounds, every one always maintained the reservation, so I figured it would not be much of a problem.
But if anyone has any problem with the current reservations list, please post.

The next batch will use an entirely different reservation system.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Rick,

The shipping fee from Ardennes is €15 worldwide (at least half a year ago ;) ).

Matt

Hello, i am new here when does the Vault get re stocked? i have a Yellow stone that was my grandfathers on 1920. It was
used every day in a barber shop in London and then a butchers shop, its only just down to the support stone! It out lived
generations, so i am going to replace it with some thing really special, i had been using it to hone my razor with a slurry
and then the water as directed by father. i had to lap it and sadly it gave up the ghost. So i thought i would wait to see a
real nice stone to pass on to my Son (well in my will). I must admit i am using a norton, and it just does not feel right to me to but the finishing touches to a silver steel razor.

This web site is great. Well done Bart. Splendid job. The razor is only as good as the stone it is whetted upon.

Welcome to Coticule.be, Bluestone.

I always love stories about Coticules being used and cherished by more than one generation. The stone wore out, but knowing how much good use your grandfather and father got out of it, calls rather for a celebration than a morning. From "barber's stone" to "butcher's stone", I love it!

I have a new batch of Coticules to test, boxed in my desk. Pictures are taken, I should make time to add them to the Vault. But none of them are tested yet, so it will be another while before they can be reserved. Would there be 48 hours in a day, I'd still be short of time.:(

Kind regards,
Bart.

Oh please let me know when and how. I really don't want to miss out this time. What I gather from your post is that the current pictures in the vault are not the new ones but still the old ones? And that sometime in the next few days you will begin posting the new pictures and than begin assessing them and posting that information? Am I getting the just of it? Also Bart, as well as other forum members I know you are a busy men but if I could trouble you for advice I would be greatly appreciative, that goes for everyone on this site, whose collective knowledge and sharing of information is not only generous but priceless, so I give you all a big Thank You. Anyhow, what would be a good choice for me as my second coticule. I'm not planning on buying anymore for awhile after this (so i say). And my first and only coticule is a combo 8" x 3" "La Dressante au Blue". What would be a good hone for me, from the standpoint that I am a beginner but I expect I will progress so I don't want to buy a stone soley on the fact that I am a beginner but it should be given some weight in the decision processes. I seem to prefer a little larger stone because is seems easier for me to hone on at this stage, but perhaps I am incorrect in this assumption. I would also like a stone that can be used from start to finish if that's possible? Go from setting the bevel to being able to polish as well. Maybe that's not realistic, or it's like duh we all are looking for that kind of stone so good luck jerk request but if I could get the opinions of forum members I would be so appreciative.

Cheers,
borebrush

My advice must be to hold off buying anything till you can get perfect results of your "Dressante au Bleu". The vast majority of Coticule is able to hone razors from start to finish. I'm quite sure yours will be no exception. That does not mean you can buy a completely worn Ebay razor and use a Coticule to restore it to a functional state. It just means that you could buy any new, or restored razor and shave for the rest of your life with it without ever needing another hone than your Coticule.

There are several articles present in the sharpening academy, offering various procedures to achieve just that. If you haven't mastered at least one of those methods on your first Coticule, no second will ever solve a problem you might have.

I'm not entirely sure that's the advice you were expecting, but it is really the best I can give.

Enjoy the one you already have. If you're having troubles figuring it our, start a thread and several of our most experienced members will overwhelm you with good advice.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Thank You, it seems like perfectly logical advice to me. Wait and learn the in's and out's of my current coticule. It's more time and technique than it is trying to find the perfect magic stone or buying a very expensive razor thinking it will shave you better. I appreciate your cander and wisdom and this is the reason that I love this site. Is there a way to make a donation to the site?

Cheers,
borebrush

It seems like every stone I'm interested in gets snatched up before I even know it's listed. That being the case, I'm thinking of buying a stone from one of the retailers. Problem is, how can I know the quality and honing characteristics of a stone I buy from a retailer? I know they say they have select and standard, but from my review of the Coticule Vault it seems to me that within the select grade, there are good, better, best, etc. stones. I want a stone that is capable of giving a +++ shave off the slurry, if I remember correctly.

Also, I see some people buy more than one stone. I'm guessing they might be retailers. How do I find out if a stone I'm interested in has been purchased for resale?

Fdennis, Welcome on Coticule.be!

All Coticules available in the Vault are listed in the first post of this thread. The list is updated when each time I bring tested hones back to Ardennes. Except for one exception, all hones in the Vault are sold by Ardennes.

I don't think the Coticules in the Vault have been sold to resellers, because they're not sold at a wholesale price. They would loose money on it. Of course, it's not forbidden to buy a hone and sell it second hand afterwards. I don't care about that. The information in the Vault remains available for whomever owns the hone.

As far a buying a +++ for sharpness of slurry in concerned, I don't think that will make much sense. Any Coticule will outperform those +++ of slurry, when the edge is eventually made keen enough and finished on plain water. "+++" means that I could get a decent shave with the edge straight off slurry, but "decent" is not equal to "superior".:)

To everyone who it may concern:
Till the last batch, reservation was a matter of being the first to claim a hone, as soon as I posted the test results. The people who were in the opportunity to monitor the website a lot had the advantage. And it was frustrating for others who felt they never had a chance to get one. For these reasons, I decided to use another reservation procedure for the future.

The new system will be properly communicated before I start putting new Coticules into the Vault. A new batch is awaiting, but I can't find the time to test them right now. It will likely be September before I can post more hones in the Vault.

Kind regards,
Bart.

He meant August, didnt you Bart? :scared:
Day-yam just as I was on the brink of thinking about, almost considering, maybe replacing my beloved #10 with another Le Viennete but less wide-kinda thing maybe?

Best wishes and (maybe) counting the days
