Prices of stones in the Vault

I must say Sir Bart after browsing the vault after a short break I find myself very drawn to #37, any information on it yet my friend?

No... it's mine :p

No luck, fellows.

n°37 is Maurice Celis' personal Coticule. It was one of the first he personally carved out the Regné mine, I believe over a decade ago. I asked me to run my tests on it, but emphasized that the gem is NOT for sale. I didn't complete the tests yet, but I can tell you that this one is amazingly fast on water. Maurice uses it to hone knives.
It deserves a place in the Vault, don't you agree?:)

Bart.

I remember you saying that as well... confirmed when I saw that big "M" written on the stone in the photo... well I guess that's the "off limits" stone.
I can't wait to see the close up shot....

Is stone 11 still available?

I'm very interested in getting my first coti, and that seems to have a good balance between fast/slow.

Questions:
1) Do these stones come with a slurry stone from Ardennes?
2) How are they shipped?
3) Is there a specific reason why nobody has picked up the 11 stone?

Thank you

I can answer that for you.

Both mine came with slurry stones, They are shipped to you from ardenees for 15 euros aprox. Box will cost you extra. You email bart , You will recieve paypal invoice from rob.He will send coti to you, I'd mention the slurry stone and i'm sure he will send you one.

The hone look's fine, bart would'nt of put it in the vault if it was'nt any good.

Hello Bruno and welcome to coticule.be!

The first post in this thread is Bart's list of all the stones which have been reviewed, and offered for reservations. As of this moment, most of them have already been reserved, purchased and delivered to their new homes (including mine  ). 11 seems to be available - if you haven't checked the list, that was a good shot! :D

  1. [li] Yes, slurry stones are provided;[/li]
[li] my 2 Cotis, together with 3 others for another member were shipped via airmail, but I don't know if this is the rule. Standardized shipping fee from Ardennes is €15;[/li]
[li] hm... Actually I myself considered either #11 or #14... Dunno why, maybe there's not enough people here or we don't have enough cash to buy them all... Can't see any particular reason, maybe this small corner filled with glue was a put-off. However, once I got my Cotis I realised that this is utterly insignificant, you don't run your razor up to a very corner, and actually the shape of #11 is probably more comfortable to hone than my #14... But these are real nuances.[/li]

Get it while you can, I've got them since maybe two weeks and already can't imagine living without them!

regards,
Matt

n°11 's current status.

Someone e-mailed me to buy that hone a few days ago. I sent a reply, explaining how the Vault works. I asked him if he wanted me to contact Ardennes on his behalf. He confirmed, so I e-mailed Maurice that there was a seller for n°11.

In the mean time Bruno arrived here at this thread inquiring about the same n°11. I e-mail Bruno to tell him that he missed n°11 by one day, suggesting that he'd take a look at n°1.

One day later, the initial buyer backs out of his word to buy the hone at Ardennes. So I e-mailed Bruno to tell him that n°11 is available again.

I haven't heard back yet from Bruno (who is not the same person as Bruno of TheVintageScent, Ralfy).

Michael, if Bruno doesn't take it, or if he doesn't get back to me before Thursday, it's yours to have, if you're still interested.

I think that's the fair way to do this.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Minutes after I typed my previous post, Bruno's reply arrived in my mailbox.
He's going to take n°11.

If you drop me an e-mail, Michael, I'll see how I can help you out. (click my name in the members' list, accessible through the "Machine Room" menu)

Kind regards,
Bart.

Hi All,

I have been a lurker on this forum for a while and after reading as much as I could about these wonderful hones and what all they can do, I decided to bite the bullet on no. 1. I just sent a PM to Bart asking whether I could purchase it.

I hope to learn the art of sharpening on my cheap throwaway razors. Is there anyone in the US that would care to 'evaluate' my work? I live in the San Francisco Bay Area but would be happy to mail my razor too.

Thanks,

Gaurav

Welcome Gaurav.

Coticule no.1 is a nice looking stone, and I've wondered why no body (that I know of) has gotten it yet! I considered it, but I already have 5 coticules, so I can hold off for now. :p

I don't live anywhere near you, but hopefully somebody does that can give you a hand. You could even mail a razor you sharpened to someone to evaluate. Actually, Bart offers free coticule honing to members (as far as I know) of this site, so maybe you should take up that service so you could have a great benchmark of sharpness/smoothness of a coticule.

There's plenty of information here though, check out the "Coticule Sharpening Academy" on this site, as well as reading posts to learn as much as you can.

Hi and welcome Gaurav, I am sure you will find more than enough information and advice here, you may want to re consider learning to hone on cheap throwaway razors, if I am to understand that by that you mean low quality, in my experience they simply dont take a good edge, or if you mean old worn or damaged yet good quality, again these present their own problems that some of the most experienced of us find some what a challenge at times.
Best wishes and welcome once again

Hi Bart,

I first would like to compliment you on the website and the topic. I'm a newbie here, and have been exploring the information on the coticules with eager eyes.
I am considering making a reservation for #35 as I  it's texture, but I am also attracted to the split one #36. As for #36, is there any chance the upper layer splits or breaks off (as I see a diagonal split on top of it)? Any influence on the blade that one needs to be aware of?
Do you have any idea on pricing (as you had that info for the first batch?) or will Ardennes provide that?
Thanks
