Hone of the day (HOTD)

This Fr. Herder #75 flopped on the mat yesterday and I just had to clean it up. This morning I honed it and did a testshave.
it is a keeper. The spots near the edge will have to stay I am afraid.
probably made in the beginning of 1900.
Honed with synthetics up to 8k and then finished it of on a Kiitta.

my hone of the day is a chosera 800 on which I spent more than a hour yesterday evening

the George Britain flopped on the doormat yesterday and I started cleaning her up. Before putting more effort in the restore I wanted to know if she would take an edge. Nice thin bevel Is to be seen.

Pictures:
1. As shown by seller
2. opening the package 3 cm wide
3. Removed scales and first cleanup
4. choSera 800 with double tape because of bevelangle of 14.5 degrees
5. bevel compared with an other GB

I'll be very interested in your results. btw.. where can I get hold of a honable Gold Dollar? You know.. one that doesn't need all the bodywork done on it before the bevel can sit flat on a stone. I'm guessing these GD's above are Hone ready for your testing project?

yes, they are done. I use them for a Try a Straight Razor on the Dutch shaving forum and I also sell them to interested shavers.

Having unpinned the Razors that arieved this week, spruced up the preswood scales, and polished the blades and re-sheathed everything, today it was time for honing. Basic progression on all but the finisher the same, K1040, Naniwa Gouken 12k, but then
  1. Finish on yellow green Thuringian
  2. Finish on Les Latneuses
  3. Finish on Trout (Saxonian Oilstone)
  4. Finish on Cretan oilstone
I think the razors were all NOS and only had light flash rust from storage in a few places. All still full 11/16" and all still sharp out of the box (which needed to be eliminated though, as unpinning and polishing sharp blades is not the bestidea). Now I'm curious to see if and what noticeable differences there will be for me in the finishers.

Interesting, because I have always used my cretan oilstone as a Bevel setter and when maxed out on water it felt like 6k, never considered it could be used as a finisher, never used it with oil thoug.

here is mine

Nice stone. However. Cretan Oilstones may vary re finest. The blueish ones are usualy the finest and mine ist definelty a finisher. Anyway, you have to level it very carefully and "break it in" by using some kitchen knives or other tools. And, it is an Oil stone, so try it with oil.

By the way. Today I compared the two razors 3 and 4 and could not feel any difference between the one finished on the saxonian oilstone and the one finished on the cretan Oilstone. Both make very fine ans smoth bevels.

And indeed. The Cretan OIlstone has a wide range. One can also use it to set bevels with it and it is the beloved stone of greek butchers.
