Hone of the day (HOTD)

Heljestrand can take a while. Luckily, they keep their edge long as well.
I took a mm of of a A.D. once, had a ding that deep, did that by seesawing over the DMT. Went fast, however, setting the bevel afterwards took a small eternity.

@Kamp I have the same one. I started to clean it, but did not hone it yet. My experience is humble, but I noticed the steel on the heljestrands is very hard. Good luck with yours! Keep us informed.
Yes it is very hard steel normally can get a ding out with my 1k but with this steel it did not do much, even the 400 i was honing for 1 hour 15 minutes on the 40o before vi could switch back to the 1 k so i think it is quite hard.

Think i will do a Jnat progression with my Nakayama or my Okudo for the rest of the honing la Trier in the week. Just heard from someone else this razor is from 1867- 1873 so old one.

I worked on a damast steel pradat brun frameback (l'electrique stamped on the blade). It had chip near the point. I removed it with shapton glass stone 220 grit.

After that progression shapton glass stone 1k, 2k, coticule 15cm * 4cm and small thuringer. Before I honed damast blade frameback on an ozuku, but it felt to sharp. Because the coticule and thuringer were small I could work on parts of the blade during the strike.

I worked again in a heljestrand mk7. Progression sharpton 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k, ozuku with tomo and now the shave felt good.

Also an ssa eskilstuna nr41. I only removed the chips. The razor looks like a copy of the heljestrand mk24.

To continue with the honing of sunday on the Hjelstrand frameback yesterday evening i went to my Nakayama did a Botan Tenjio Mejiro Koma and tomo progression .

This morning the shave it went oke ( smooth after 3 passes) could be beter but not so bad, i had to push more then i wanted. So will redo this one in the coming week

I've been busy honing. I did the same progression on all the razors.

Shapton 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k, okuzu with tomo nagura.

The razors are heljestrand frameback, tarry levigne, and Puma 22. It is a shame the putting on the levigne was deep.

Because the normall things were frustrated due to the coronavirus( no sport training for my daughter and no weekly market for food shopping) decided to rehone the C.V. Hjestrand Frameback 11/16 which i did a few weeks ago thisafternoon.
On the tang it says Paris 1855 1867 Stockholm 1866 London 1851 C. V. Hjestrand Eskilstuna Prisbelont. Scales look to be horn not sure.
It shaved oké but felt it could be beter so i went back to my chosera 1k. Then onto the Superstone 3k and gouken hayabusa 4k.
Then to the Nakayamam I did a Botan Tenjio Mejiro Koma and tomo progression .
Felt really nice honing on the stone, test shave morning..... and this is the best edge i made so far.... great

@Kamp I'm in the same position all of a sudden I have a lot of free time on my hands. I also did a rehone of my heljestrand frameback. Shapton glass stone 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k, and ozuku. As a tomo I used this stone. I looked on the herder website. It is a yamaichi piece. I finished on plain water.

After stropping hht worked along the blade. The shave will proof if it is ok.

So on the bench this afternoon a George Butler & Co. Trinity Works Sheffield England. A 6/8 full hollow with on the blade a portret of Shakespeare with the saying " KEEN as is this razors edge invisible" Shakespeare Love's Llabor Lost. With it looks like plastic handle and wedge.

So first the sharpie test, it needed 1 layer of tape. Then setting the bevel on my Naniwa chosera 1k middle went quick the toe and heel were not coming along so focused on those after that blending it with x strokes.
After that Naniwa super stones 3 K and Naniwa Hayabusa 4K and Naniwa Super Stone 10 K.

Then for the first time trying my new natural combo coticule as a finisher ( wanted to first try it only as a finisher before using it further) so under running water, then to my help strop then again under water.

Then the shave.... I am impressed for a first time, a smooth and very pleasurable shave, not as keen as when i do a full Jnat progression but a very nice shave nontheless.

So my Koraat 8/8 1/4 grind barbernotch needed a refresh, it still had the edge from the maker.
I know Ulrik used tape so i used 1 layer. The scales are cocobolo wedge and pins brass.

I used my Nakayama with Tsustumi black nagura, Mejiro, Komo and Tomo.
Will shave in the morning and see how the refresh went.

Yes, Ulrik uses thick tape, but because Wim started with a Tsushima Black which coresponds with a 5k synthetic he will probably be oke with 1 layer of tape this time. One layer of thick tape will add about 1,5 degree to the bevel angle. In general it will depend on the razor and sometimes you need a layer of tape and sometimes even two, culculating the current angle will tell you if it’s necessary. For me I prefer a bevel angle around 18 degrees and that’s the reason I will seldom use tape anymore.

So last year around this time i got this wedge razor and tried to set a bevel on it, i failed.

Yesterday i tried again with 2 layers of tape i used my Naniwa chosera 1k, superstone 3k and gouken hayabusa 4k.
This morning i continued with my Shoubudani with botan Tenjio Mejiro Koma and tomo slurry.

The shave was acceptabel i believe i could approve on it so i think this one will go back to the stones shortly.

The razor is a 6/8 John. C. Cockhill Sheffield wedge , with horn scales, it is a shame the scales are not completly whole (see pictures)

so yesterday evening I started again on the 1K after that i went with a unknown midrange Jnat then my Nakayama with full progression (botan, tenyjo, mejiro, koma, tomo) this morning with the shave, a real good result a 2 pass shave... so this one will go in my rotation.

So first time using my new natural combo coticule, i used 1 of my practise razors a 6/8 half hollow Frederick Reynolds with some new plastic scales and wedge.

First i killed the edge and set the bevel again on my Naniwa chosera 1k, then i made a slurry on my coticule and i think i dilluted it about 4 times finishing under running water then it was beginning to stick.

Then a testshave a very nice edge (certainly for using the coticule for the first time) not as keen as with a full Jnat progression but a very smooth shave, very nice. But also it did not take so long as a full Jnat progression. Have to practise it with some other razors to get the stone more.

And before i use this razor again i have to soft out the shoulder it is almost creeping up on the stones, so have to regrind it smooth.
